Brad Shepik Organ Trio - Top Down

Bitrate: 320K/s
Year: 2016
Time: 50:00
Size: 114,8 MB
Label: JLC Records
Styles: Jazz/Progressive Jazz
Art: Front

Tracks Listing:
 1. Friday - 7:12
 2. Sweet Suzy - 5:55
 3. Vampa - 5:11
 4. Hall - 5:49
 5. Top in the Middle - 8:28
 6. Major Major - 5:03
 7. Aeolia - 6:14
 8. Stumma Cake - 6:05

Featuring Gary Versace (organ) and Mark Ferber (drums), the comfort and easy rapport is apparent as they groove their way through full tilt improvisation, funk, blues, swing, South American and Balkan rhythms in this update of the time honored organ trio.
Shepik writes about Top Down- "These compositions (except Gary Peacock's Major Major) were written in the late spring/early summer of 2015. Friday evokes a wide open elation I feel working in my studio in Brooklyn. Sweet Suzy, written just a few days before the recording recalls the Meter's and the blues and was a highlight of the recording for me. There's more than a hint of one of my favorite guitarists, John Scofield, on this tune. Coincidentally, on the morning of the day of this album's second recording session, I had the honor to record a song with him along with Peter Bernstein and Adam Rogers as part of an New York University Guitar Ensemble record. Vampa has South American feel though I didn't have a specific regional rhythm in mind. The tune's harmonic/rhythmic structure leaves a lot of room for melodic invention and suggested a conversation in the trading choruses. Hall is dedicated to Jim Hall, the giant of the guitar whose influence is felt on every generation of guitarists that have come along since the the late 1950's. Something in the wide melodic intervals and fluid rhythm suggested his artistry. Top in the Middle is a bluesy AABC form however the chords deviate and suggest a somewhat difficult climb to the goal. The title refers to the inevitable mix of sweet and bitter as life unfolds. Major Major has been a favorite tune from Gary Peacock's "Tales of Another" for many years, I had the privilege of playing a session with him when I was 19. Aeolia is a circular tune with a 7/8 Balkan rhythm that reminds me of a friend who lives on a windy island. I was playing with harmonic colors and phrasing on Stumma Cake. The tune's title could be a dessert but the final two chords reflect a mild discomfort experienced occasionally by the very young."

Peter Bernstein - Stranger In Paradise

Bitrate: 320K/s
Year: 2004
Time: 66:31
Size: 153,1 MB
Label: Venus / Tokuma Records
Styles: Jazz/Guitar Jazz
Art: Front

Tracks Listing:
 1. Venus Blues - 7:19
 2. Stranger In Paradise - 6:51
 3. Luiza - 6:24
 4. How Little We Know - 6:04
 5. Bobblehed - 6:03
 6. Just A Thought - 8:42
 7. This Is Always - 6:30
 8. Soul Stirrin - 5:40
 9. That Sunday,That Summer - 6:34
10. Autumn Nocturne - 6:20

Guitarist Peter Bernstein is reunited with pianist Brad Mehldau once more (their fourth recording together under Bernstein's name) and also keeps the rhythm section intact from his earlier Criss Cross CD Heart's Content, with Larry Grenadier on bass and drummer Bill Stewart. These rewarding sessions blend elements of hard bop and post-bop, including an intriguing, slightly off-center approach to "Stranger in Paradise" and an intricate, moving interpretation of "This Is Always," a ballad that can become stale in the wrong hands. The quartet also tackles quite a few works that don't get all that much attention, like a greasy arranging of Babs Gonzales' "Soul Stirrin'" and a breezy take of "That Sunday, That Summer," the latter a hit for Nat King Cole during his years as a popular singer. Bernstein also adds four potent originals, all of which set the band afire. It is a shame that Peter Bernstein is overlooked by American record labels, but be thankful that the Japanese know talent when they hear it and invest the time and money to document his work. Highly recommended!

Deranged blues for the frayed margins of society.
Linoleum Blownaparte is a blues trio with an emotional tic, a group of guys who can't stop picking at that spot. Inspired by a fictional character who may or may not have been found in a swamp and educated by landed gentry only to wander back into the wilds, the band gleefully embraces all of the contradictions this suggests. Simultaneously eloquent and unrepentant they are the scoundrels you find yourself loving even though you know better.

"Memories of Atlantic, Stax, Hi, and possibly Goldwax abound, but they are only memories, for this is music that is only inspired by that which was and builds upon those foundations and takes the music to another level. Missy does not dwell in the past recreating perfect copies of the old, she is forming new types and styles even if they are very familiar."~Brian Harman, BluesArtStudio.com

Country blues stylist Rishell is too smart to affect the involved emotional urgencies of the prewar Delta bluesmen he regards with deep respect. Performing solo on nine cuts on his first recording, the Cambridge-based vocalist/guitarist addresses classic material by Tommy Johnson, Blind Blake, and others, with a sharp eye toward capturing the timelessness of themes such as anxiety in hard times and the urge to roam. Far less involving are several tracks with a Chicago-style band, where he sacrifices personality to generic partying -- © Frank John Hadley 1993

This album is part of a four part series showcasing Ron Levy as a composer and master musician. It is an anthology drawn from the various recordings Mr. Levy produced, arranged and played his signature sound on piano, electric piano, vibes, guitar and Hammond organ. There are even a couple of his Blues inspired vocals!
Historically over the last twenty years, Ron has blended many different styles and genres into his own unique musical gumbo within each of his critically acclaimed and popular recordings. Enough so, he has now been able to assemble four separate full length albums comprised in each genre of grooves.
These album titles aptly describe each particular mood and vibe contained in each of them: “Mo’ JAZZY Grooves” - “FUNKY Soul Grooves” - “Mo’ BLUES & Grooves” and “LATIN-a-licious Grooves”.
This newest collection is in addition to his three previously released anthologies: Ron Levy’s Wild Kingdom - “Best Grooves and Jams” - “Jazz-a-licious Grooves” and “Best of RLWK”. All distributed by CdBaby and on his Facebook fan page music store.
As usual, Levy has always surrounded himself with many of the most talented musicians in the world throughout his long and celebrated career. They all have interpreted his compositions with soulful empathy, adding their own unique artistic creative contributions and styles to help fulfill Ron’s vision of his original compositions and are featured throughout all four albums.
Included in this collection are: Karl Denson, Melvin Sparks, The Memphis Horns, Idris Muhammad, James Gadson, David T. Walker, Stanley Banks, Jeff Lockhart, Crispin Cioe, ‘Sax’ Gordon, Albert Collins, Tutu Jones, Johnnie Bassett, Preston Shannon, Smokey Wilson, Bobby Forte, Jim Spake and Scott Thompson, Anson Funderburg and Sam Myers, Kim Wilson, Jimmie Vaughan, Roomful of Blues, Lowell Fulson, Larry Davis and Ronnie Earl.
These songs as well as many of these personalities (and many more) are further explained and candidly revealed in Ron’s web-book, “Tales of a Road Dog” available on his website. Look up Ron Levy / Levtron - online. We hope you enjoy these selections and include them in your regular rotation and consider them among your favorites. So stay tuned, there’s much more to come. Enjoy!

Gregory Raymond "Greg" Quill (18 April 1947 – 5 May 2013) was an Australian-born musician, singer-songwriter and journalist.
Quill stands as one of the foremost figures in the local folk-country scene, and his invigorating love of involvement with his music is one reason why he commands the respect of Australia's top musicians and music writers. He ran The Shack (a popular Sydney folk haven) for four years, and at the age of 19 took on the Warrngah Shire Council to the Supreme court when they attempted to close down the club. He was president of  the folk club at the University of Sydney where he graduated from with a BA in English Literature and Languages (shades of Kris Kristofferson). As a guitar teacher he has taught the music and written it (once a top-rate journalist for Go-Set and Daily Planet) (Extract from Go-Set Magazine, May 25, 1974 p6 - thanks to Woodynet)
He lived in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and was an entertainment columnist at the Toronto Star newspaper from the mid-1980s until his death in May 2013. In Australia he came to popular fame as a singer-songwriter for the country rock band, Country Radio (1970–73). Their biggest hit, "Gyspy Queen", was released in August 1972 and was co-written by Quill with band mate, Kerryn Tolhurst, which peaked at No. 12 on the Go-Set National Top 40. After getting an arts grant, Quill travelled to Toronto in 1974 and by mid-1980s had become a journalist at the Toronto Star. By 1983 he was married to Ellen Davidson, a public relations executive.
In 1974, Quill recorded a solo studio album, The Outlaw's Reply, with the financial backing of Sydney-based executive producer and Trafalgar Studios owner Charles Fisher. It was produced by John L Sayers and featured Country Radio alumni: Blanchflower, Bolton, Du Bois, Hinton and Tolhurst, plus former collaborator Jones on keyboards. Also appearing on the album were Barry Leef on backing vocals, Chris Neal on synthesisers and Peter Walker on guitar. Two singles from the album were issued during 1975: "She Do It to Me" (April) and "Blackmail" / "The Outlaw's Reply" (September).
The album included the Quill song "Almost Freedom", which had previously been covered by former Company Caine singer Gulliver Smith on his 1973 solo LP The Band's Alright But The Singer Is .... During 1974 Festival also released a compilation album, 'Gypsy Queen', credited to Greg Quill & Country Radio, contained selection of album tracks, and A- and B-sides of singles. It included Quill's cover of the country classic "Singin' the Blues", which featured Renee Geyer on backing vocals and Stacpool on guitar. In May 1975 Quill promoted the release of The Outlaw's Reply by a performance at the Sydney Opera House, backed by the musicians who had contributed to the album. The Dingoes and Richard Clapton were also part of the first all-Australian country-rock show to take place on the Opera House's main stage. It was Quill's final performance in Australia for almost four years. [extract from wikipedia]
Greg Quill died on 5 May 2013 at his home in Hamilton. His family announced that he had "passed away suddenly but peacefully from complications due to pneumonia and a recently diagnosed case of sleep apnea". Aged 66, he was still an entertainment journalist for the Toronto Star at the time of his death.
This post consists of MP3's (320kps) ripped from vinyl (thanks to Micko at Midoztouch) and full album artwork.  If you were a fan of Country Radio and the Dingoes, then you will really enjoy this unique gem.  My interest in this album extends even further with the appearance of Ex-Bakery guitarist Peter Walker who adds some great backing guitar work.

The Rowans - Jubilation

Bitrate: 320K/s
Year: 1977
Time: 36:09
Size: 83,2 MB
Label: Elektra
Styles: Rock/Coumtry Rock/Folk Rock
Art: Front

Tracks Listing:
 1. Best Of Friends - 3:09
 2. Give Ya Good Lovin' - 3:18
 3. Hoo Doo Love - 5:22
 4. Love's Secret Sighs - 2:37
 5. Don't Say Goodbye - 3:51
 6. Lovelight - 4:22
 7. New Horizons - 4:43
 8. Makin' It Easy - 3:30
 9. Calle Music - 5:15

While not exactly the polar opposite of their previous long-player, Sibling Rivalry (1975), Jubilation all but abandoned the multiple and disparate streams of musicality that practically defined the uniqueness of the Rowan Brothers. Sadly, much of the material on this platter seems to have been aimed at creating a less eclectic and more concurrently pop-friendly sound. Even their otherwise crystalline harmonies come off forced, as evidenced by the slick midtempo opener, "Best of Friends," or Bernie Krause's soulless synthesizer whining throughout the syrupy ballad "New Horizons." "Don't Say Goodbye," one of the better contributions from Peter Rowan, features another notable guest musician, Stephane Grappelli. The tune takes on a discernible Hot Club of France jazz groove that is simply irresistible when coupled with the trio's three-part vocals. Andy Narell's compact string arrangement likewise attempts to save the proceedings on Chris and Peter's emotive and slightly Baroque "Love's Secret Sighs." The disco-fied "Hoo Doo Love" is a very Caucasian and equally dismissible attempt at R&B, setting up the insipid and brash brass on "Lovelight." While undeniably lightweight, the tropically flavored "Calle Music" concludes Jubilation in much the same lackluster fashion with which it began. Quite understandably, the trio's record company was not able to market Jubilation to the same audience that may have enjoyed their earlier works. It languished out of print for over two decades before it was released alongside Sibling Rivalry on a double-play CD in 2004. While this would be their final album on Asylum, the Rowans would reconvene during the ensuing years to a decidedly heartier reception as Peter Rowan & the Rowan Brothers.

The Rowans - Sibling Rivalry

 1. Ooh My Love - 4:30
 2. Love Is - 4:10

 4. If I Only Could - 3:52
 5. No Desamines Amor (Don't Disappoint Love) - 3:55
 6. Ya Ba Da Ba - 2:52
 7. Fire Dragon - 0:58
 8. Mongolian Swamp-King's Men - 4:14
 9. Joaquin Murrieta - 8:29
10. Sword Of Faith-Soldier Of The Cross - 4:59

Although the Rowans -- Peter (guitar/mandolin/vocals), Lorin (guitar/vocals), and Chris (guitar/flute) -- hailed from Massachusetts, their rural leanings resurfaced on their third and arguably most accessible collection to date. The trio's strengths as musical chameleons are evident in both their writing and their eclectic performance styles. This is undoubtedly a double-edged sword, as it likewise made them difficult to adequately "market" to the typical mid-'70s pop music audience. Indeed, the term "progressive bluegrass" seems apt in capturing the modern directions that fuse the strict acoustic lineage and prowess of bluegrass with any number of disparate elements, such as jazz, pop, and country-rock. In addition to exploring those aural amalgamations, they venture into a rocksteady Rasta vibe on "Love Is" and even straight-ahead MOR during the slightly Philly soul-influenced "Ooh My Love." They don't stray far for very long, however, as "Tired Hands," "Mongolian Swamp/Kings Men," and the extended eight-plus minute "Joaquin Murrieta" venture closer to their conventional ancestry. The latter title is one of the more obvious examples of Peter Rowan's ability to augment a Spanish-flavored ballad with a sense of the decidedly American bluegrass tradition. The breezy vocals on "If I Only Could" scored the Rowans a little bit of chart action, conjuring up the laid-back slightly folkie sound of other West Coast acts such as the Eagles and America. The same can be said of the equally amiable "No Desanimes Amor (Don't Disappoint Love)," which also provides a suitable backdrop for their robust three-part harmonies. In 2004, Sibling Rivalry was issued on compact disc and paired with the follow-up, Jubilation (1977), onto a two-fer CD. As the LP had been out of print for over two decades, for many enthusiasts this release may well be their first opportunity to enjoy this classic recording. It is also recommended as the perfect starting point for the curious.

Musicians:
Mike Halby - guitar & vocals
Walter Trout - lead guitar & vocals
Rick Kellog - harp & vocals
Raul Rodriguez - bass & vocals
Fito De La Parra - drums

"We'd like to take you back to Woodstock," Bob Hite peremptorily announces on the opening of this live set, whisking listeners back in time to Canned Heat's heyday. A dozen years had since passed, and the world was about to be inundated by new wave, but down under in Australia in 1981, the '60s still reigned supreme. Beyond drummer Fito de la Parra, who joined the group back in 1970, the rest of Heat's members were recent arrivals -- Michael Halby, Rick Kellogg, Ernie Rodriguez and Walter Trout -- the latter would take over lead vocals in a few months' time after Hite's fatal heart attack. Here, however, he sounds fit as a fiddle, and the band is raring to go on and on. And they do just that on "Refried Hockey Boogie" which, at 23-plus minutes sprawled gloriously across the entire second side of the original vinyl album, which was released in 1981 by the Bedrock label. Side one comprised enthusiastic run-throughs of Heat's three hits, an exhilarating take on the title track of their recently released Kings of the Boogie studio set, and a stomping version of "Amphetamine Annie," like "Refried" from Heat's 1968 Boogie with Canned Heat album.  It was one heck of a show, which is why the album has remained on the shelves in so many parts of the world. Their glory days were long gone, but the band boogied on like the '60s never ended. -- Allmusic.

11. Run You Down - 6:09
12. Great Western Highway - 2:15

Chances are that you will not read too many bad reviews of The Snowdroppers’ debut album ‘Too Late To Pray’. It is not the kind of release that is going to pick up too many casual listeners, since the rockabilly quartet from Sydney ply their trade in a genre that has not stormed the charts for many decades. As such, the band are likely to be preaching to the converted; either fans of the musical style, or those impressed during a live support slot. Having not seen them live myself is no hindrance in coming to the latter conclusion. Some bands are only meant to be heard live, and The Snowdroppers are clearly one of them.
Having said that, opener ‘Do The Stomp’ is likely to gain some degree of attention. Beginning with a steady beat and some harmonica, the repetitive – yet infectious – sing-along chorus of “I’ve been working hard, woh yeah, all night” may be simple, but provides one of the few true hooks of the LP. Elsewhere, only the killer guitar lick and catchy chorus of ‘Swear It On The Bible’ comes close. That’s not to say that there are no other worthwhile tracks evident on ‘Too Late To Pray’, because there are. The modernized rock’n’roll of ‘F*cked Up Blues’, the rapid-fire ‘Bottom of the Trough’ and the rollicking ‘Roll In My Sweet Baby’s Arms’ all have merit, but seem incomplete and a little desperate to be noticed.
The main issue with ‘Too Late To Pray’ is not so much in it’s better songs, but the depths to which its poorer tracks plummet. The swaggering ‘Good Drugs Bad Women’ will undoubtedly have its fans, but with closing lyrics like “So suck on my dick and give my balls a good lickin’, coz there ain’t nothing finer than good drugs & bad women”, it’s sure to have just as many detractors. Meanwhile, as the second half of the album heads in a swampy Southern (U.S.A) blues direction, it all gets rather boring. The fact that these songs are also the longest of the album by far makes it all the more worse.
It is not as if The Snowdroppers do not give their all… Lead vocalist and banjo player Johnny Wishbone (a Matt Damon look-alike who is presumably named after Eddie Murphy’s psychic alter-ego from ‘Beverly Hills Cop 2’) tries his darnedest to convince us he can pull off any role, but sums it up best when he bellows “I’ve never been to Kentucky. Lord, I’ve never been to Tennessee”. Musically, a virtual smorgasbord is used as an attempt to spice things up, with banjo, harmonica, trombone, saxophone & organ all coming into play. Yet, it’s a tell-tale sign that the good ol’ electric guitar ultimately comes off as the most effective instrument.
Taking their name from a 1920’s slang term for cocaine addicts, The Snowdroppers perform songs that come off as somewhere between nursery rhymes and a hillbilly sing-along. For a sound so dated, they actually do a half-decent job of modernizing their bluesy rockabilly style, but it still falls a little short of resulting in a complete and accomplished debut full-length release. Often sounding too desperate to seek attention on record, it is exactly the type of music that would go down in an entertaining fashion at the local pub on a Saturday night. Then again, most music does when you’re as drunk as a skunk.

Clemons’ son, Nick, is also a veteran recording artist, and he recently released a new album, "We All Bleed the Same". (Jake is the late Big Man’s nephew.) The latest chapter in a recording career that includes 1991’s In the Sunlight,1993 EP "Waiting For You" and 2013’s "Just to Survive", We All Bleed the Same finds Nick continuing his charity work on behalf of people struggling with addiction while carrying forward the Clemons family’s musical legacy — a responsibility that, as he said in the interview, he eagerly embraces.
“My father gave a lot of love, a lot of blood, sweat and tears, and the fans appreciate it,” said Clemons. “It’s something I aspire to in my daily work. He gave me a great work ethic, and I think that’s what spurs me to get things done.”
The Nick Clemons Band has been performing at venues across North America mixing rock, funk, jazz, R&B, and pop styles into an original uplifting sound that always gets the crowd on it's feet. Based in Asbury Park, New Jersey, the band is named for it's leader, Nick Clemons - the oldest son of the legendary saxophonist, The E Street Band's Clarence "Big Man" Clemons. He has shared the stage with Bobby Bandiera, John Eddie, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Jimmy Vivino, and Clarence Clemons. "The most important thing to me," Clemons says ,"is to get a warm feeling from a crowd, that juice or electricity that makes you want to give more."  "We All Bleed the Same" is the name of the new CD by NCB featuring the title track "We All Bleed the Same" A strong collection of meaningful lyrics with a mixture of rock and Funk with an alternative edge.
This is by far NCB's best work to date!

The organist/guitarist combination was popularized by the legendary Jimmy Smith in 1957. Grant Green and Larry Young took it a step further in 1964, but Smith and Wes Montgomery on their 1966 "Dynamic Duo," album, arguably defined the format. Smith also catapulted the jazz organ trio into another dimension, and set the standard for that ensemble configuration; one of the most difficult, as it requires immense technical skills. Little Charlie and Organ Grinder Swing, is comprised of Little Charlie Baty on guitar, Lorenzo Farrell on Hammond organ, and drummer J. Hansen. Skronky Tonk, is a prodigious set of swing, blues, and gypsy jazz, performed in an genuine vintage organ trio setting.
Little Charlie Baty is best known as leader of The Nightcats, a solid blues band with an extended discography on Alligator records dating back to 1987. He recently recorded and toured with the Golden State Lone Star Blues Revue, to high acclaim. This organ trio venture is a lifelong personal ambition, which he finally realized. Farrell and Hansen are his former Nightcats bandmates, and so the personal and musical chemistry is present. What might appear as a radical departure for these three, upon further analysis, is just a deeper exploration to the core of American music.
The title track determines the direction of the record, and is an indicator that Baty and company have done their homework in the soul/jazz idiom. This is one of three originals, the swinging "Gerontology," and "Cobalt Blues," being the others. Some of the repertoire is composed of standards as "How High The Moon," "Pennies From Heaven," and "Misty," all given a gentle nudge into a jazzier atmosphere.
The jazz manouche of Django Reinhardt is evident on his "Nuages," and "Django," penned by John Lewis of Modern Jazz Quartet fame. Charlie Christian is credited as the first jazz guitarist, and his "Swing To Bop," is rejuvenated with ambitious vigor. The Brazilian tinge is covered on "Receita de Samba," and "Um a Zero," whereas "Broadway," drifts into the Caribbean; displaying versatility and ability to syncopate. They wrap it up with the Benny Goodman classic "Flyin' Home," a good natured jaunt into big band territory, reinvented within the organ trio format. Throughout the record, Baty as guitarist, and Farrell in his role of organist, do a magnificent job playing off of each other with disciplined anticipation. Keeping the arrangements lean, with no rushing or clutter, makes for ease of enjoyment.
Since these musicians are based out of California, Greaseland Studios in San Jose was chosen for recording the sessions; the sound being exemplary, as the clarity of the instruments shines through. Little Charlie elected to play this music as a matter of choice and taste; serving as an homage to those musicians who inspired and challenged his trajectory, his bandmates rising to the occasion. The organ trio is a tough turf to travel, and these guys do it in style. ~James Nadal

 9. A Moment in Time - 4:40

Australian Blues artists Isaiah B Brunt's latest long player 'A Moment In Time' is due out early next month and we were lucky enough to listen to a sneak preview copy. Bringing together some of the finest blues players on the American scene (George Porter Jnr of the Meters among them), Isaiah and producer David Stocker are back with a little more funky and up tempo offering.
Setting Brunt a big task, I put my headphones on and began listening as my megabus pulled out of London's Victoria station for a five hour trip. For those familiar with the joys of a megabus journey, it probably wasn't the best moment in time..
Good Blues always has a way of drawing you in though, and it wasn't long before I forgot my surroundings and got into the groove! As I listened I was reminded of a similar sensation years earlier when hearing some of my old man's favourite albums. There is just something about the blues that sucks you in.
When hearing the opening track 'Still waiting' I was struck by Brunt's distinct vocals and the Australian twang taking on a traditional New Orlean's Blues sound and song structure. Dropping Australian names and places as the album moves along it becomes obvious that Isaiah's lyrics could connect with the everyman back home, yet appeal to the masses in the states. For me, it is still a novelty to hear 'Melbourne' mentioned in this genre of music, which in itself can be seen as a failing by the Australian music scene (or perhaps my own misfortune sheltering away?)
The production throughout is very crisp with sleek breakdowns and burning instrumental breaks. None better than the horns and sax on highlight track 'Lost Jacket Blues'.  Brunt effortlessly intertwines dance floor grooves with more serious moments on more than one occassion, and takes it down a notch for half tempo jam 'Travel Back' before bringing the beat in for 'Party Late All Night' at which point I wish I was enjoying this live with a Whiskey or seven.
As an outside of the Blues scene, I enjoyed the album overall and can imagine fans of the genre will be pleased with the care with which this record was crafted. Hopefully the release will push for the un-earthing of more Australian Blues.

Johnny Mars (born December 7, 1942) is an American electric blues harmonica player, singer, and songwriter. Over a long career, Mars has worked with Magic Sam, Earl Hooker, B.B. King, Jesse Fuller, Spencer Davis, Ian Gillan, Do-Re-Mi, Bananarama and Michael Roach. Mars was born in Laurens, South Carolina, United States to sharecropping parents. His family regularly moved house when Mars was a youngster, but at the age of nine, he was presented with his first harmonica. When he was aged fourteen, and on the death of his mother, Mars and his younger siblings moved to New Paltz, New York, and having left high school, Mars began playing in various clubs in New York. He signed a recording contract with Mercury Records whilst a member of a band named Burning Bush, and they recorded several sides with the label. By the mid 1960s, Mars had moved to California and formed the Johnny Mars Band, who found work but no recognition beyond their North California base. However, they toured with Magic Sam, and played on the same bill as Earl Hooker, B.B. King and Jesse Fuller. After advice from Rick Estrin (Little Charlie & the Nightcats), Mars toured the United Kingdom in 1972, and subsequently recorded two albums there before fully relocating to Somerset in 1978. Mars worked with the record producer, Ray Fenwick, plus Spencer Davis and Ian Gillan. His 1984 album, Life on Mars, received critical acclaim. In 1988, Mars was a guest musician on the Do-Re-Mi album, The Happiest Place in Town. Mars later worked with Bananarama on "Preacher Man" (1990) and their 1991 cover of "Long Train Running", appearing in the group's music video for the former track. b. Yorktown, Saskatchewan, Canada. A stalwart of the Canadian blues scene for three decades, this Winnipeg, Manitoba-based singer and songwriter has been a profound influence on western Canadian blues artists. The son of a Presbyterian minister, he was introduced to blues as a teenager through his brother Grant’s record collection. In 1969 the two brothers travelled to Toronto for the Mariposa Folk Festival. There McLean was introduced to singer John Hammond, who gave him some informal guitar lessons, teaching him to play Bo Diddley’s ‘I’m A Man’. He began his professional career by working audiences at the Regina Folk Club, where his social worker mother helped out in the kitchens. Among the many artists he subsequently influenced are Wide Mouth Mason and Colin James. James first met McLean when he was nine years old at the Regina Folk Club. He helped produce McLean’s 1998 album For The Blues... ‘Always’, an attempt to spread his appeal beyond Canada. Remarkably, this was only his second album. His debut, 1989’s Muddy Waters For President, was recorded at the Bud’s On Broadway club in Saskatoon (it was subsequently reissued by Homemade Music). According to McLean, ‘I only put that album out so fans would have something to listen to when I wasn’t around.’ However, For The Blues... ‘Always’ was a more considered piece of work, distilling the best moments from 18 songs recorded over three days at Colin James’ Rat’s Ass studio in Vancouver. James provided acoustic and slide guitar, with other Vancouver musicians including Norm Fisher (bass), Eric Webster (piano) and Chris Norquiest (drums) contributing. The final 10 selections included ‘Little Red Rooster’ (Willie Dixon), ‘Just Your Fool’ (Little Walter), ‘Dust My Broom’ (Elmore James), ‘Rollin’ And Tumblin’’ (Muddy Waters) and ‘Cakewalk Into Town’ (Taj Mahal). McLean had originally intended to record an album of originals, before he was persuaded to put his ‘classic blues repertoire’ on record. The total budget for the recording was just $1, 600. It was followed by a collaborative effort with Calgary guitarist Tim Williams ? an acoustic blues album entitled Fellow Travellers.

STRINGMAN DELIVERY is an electric/acoustic classic style rock band from San Antonio, TX. Their original rock music is reminiscent of a guitar driven lead style heard from Neil Young and Crazy Horse compositions. Their music is strongly influenced by Neil Young, Tom Petty, Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, and other classic folk rockers.
DON STEPHENS is a prolific songwriter, who has released two previous acoustic albums in his own name. With Stringman Delivery they have one other album titled Long Ride Home.
Don has been playing electric and acoustic guitar, piano, bass pedals and harmonica professionally for over thirty years. He began his music career playing coffee houses and clubs in Indiana in the mid-'70s. His sound is heavily influenced by the rock bands and folk artists of that time including Neil Young, Moody Blues, Bob Dylan, Roger McGuinn, Tom Waits and others.
GARY STEPHENS has been playing guitar for a number of years and is quite accomplished on rhythm guitar. Although a young man in his twenties... Gary is a walking encyclopedia on early classic rock songs and the bands that performed them.
MIKE CERNY is on drums. He lays down a beat that is characteristic of Mitch Mitchell of The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Other influences include superstar drummers Ginger Baker of Cream, Steve Ferrone from Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, and of course Mr. Buddy Rich. Mike has been playing drums since the '60s... so he's a natural fit for this group.
TERRELL MABRITO is the newest member of Stringman Delivery. Terrell's energetic bass licks and style is reminiscent of the late Jack Bruce. The son of a bassist, Terrell was raised listening to the stuff we play and has a passion for our music.
ERIC ZAWADZKI has mixed sound professionally dating back to the days when Molly Hatchett and Lickety Split toured together. Eric was also the sound engineer for a group called New Math... a band that headlined numerous shows in and around New York and also opened for other major East Coast concert events featuring names like The Plasmatics and The Ramones. Eric's uncanny ear for sound is taking Stringman Delivery to new levels.

Musicians:
Patrick Michael Reigel - Guitars/Bass/Vocals
Addam Jacob Woolf - Bass
Robert Eugene Gallagher Jr. - Drums/Vocals/Moog

For most artists the "rock n' roll lifestyle" is far from the fairytale that most of us imagine it to be…in fact the music industry can be a real bitch. So that's what makes it truly special when you find that rare band who can look the rigors of said lifestyle straight in the eyes, throw their collective middle fingers to the sky and with smiles on their faces, brazenly kick out their jams for the simple reason that they fuckin' love ‘em. Brothers and sisters…91s are just such a band. And on their debut album First Blood, this trio of Pennsylvanians…Patrick Michael Reigel (guitars/bass/vocals), Robert Eugene Gallagher Jr (drums/vocals/Moog) and Addam Jacob Woolf (bass)...drop ten hits of psychedelic, stoner rock goodness that are guaranteed to show you one hell of a good time. Strap yourselves in…you're gonna love this one.
The briskly paced instrumental "Enter the E" blows open the doors of First Blood, sounding somewhere along the lines of Dick Dale if the king of surf guitar got his hands on a fuzz pedal and a whole bunch of weed. The track comes and goes so quickly that you won’t even realize you’re in the middle of a contact high when it ends. And then right around the time you hear a voice whisper “looking wicked”, 91s proceed to saturate your ears with the hazy groove and relentless swagger of “Haitian Lady”. Imagine Jimmy Hendrix fronting Fu Manchu and you’re in the right sonic neighborhood. With wonderfully sleazy lyrics and riffs thick enough you could chew on them...this is rock n’ roll…this is 91s!
But if I had to choose, I’d say that one of the next three songs would be my personal favorite from this record…you can take your pick…it changes day to day. The first of these is “Knows Our Name”, featuring some nice Iommi inspired guitar playing that teeters on heavy, yet never strays from that ultra chill 91s vibe. “Hold Out” starts with fret work that could best be described as antagonistic…it just fucks with you. Here the vocals join the guitar in a sort of duet until eventually all three instruments come together to unleash the finest groove yet on First Blood. And once the band reaches the climax of this tale about a drug deal gone bad (“keep running and running…hold out…he held out”), sitting still is no longer an option. “War Hammer” is the last of the three, and sounds kind of like the Black Crowes doing stoner rock. Here the band is actually doing you a favor as they sprinkle just enough funk into the mix to make sure your lady friend can move her ass to 91s too.
Gallagher’s Moog synthesizer opens “Blue Skirt Demon” with noises more akin to an 80’s arcade than the organic, bluesy romp that the song becomes and he wastes no time getting back to his oversized bass drum and crash cymbals once it does. In this one, we hear background vocals crooning right alongside the song's chord progressions and the chorus of "blue skirt demon…hold me close…keep me till the end". Reigel’s guitar playing should be noted again here as his fingers get downright agile running up and down the frets. “Amazon Panther” keeps the bluesy vibe, but puts on a showcase of 91s' funkier side…kind of a devilishly, rock n' roll version of Parliament/Funkadelic.
“Rumble Weed” opens with an appropriately rumbling bass line from Woolf that is joined by a loose guitar lick and vocal musings about deserts, creation and existence before Reigel shoves a propulsive riff right in your face and all three 91s begin to chant “we won’t die”…it doesn’t get much cooler than this. “Thick Air”, the last proper song on First Blood, is an oh so appropriately titled groove featuring enough heavy fuzz and “thick” riffage to give you a serious case of cotton mouth…you’ll feel like you’ve been chewing on a cloud. And just like that, the album comes to a close with a brief reprise of the chaotic intro, this time dubbed “Exit the E”.
So now that you've heard a little bit about their debut album, you think you're ready to have a little fun with 91s? You see, these guys are like that friend from back in the day who always seemed to get you into trouble…you know…the bad influence who got you into even worse shit. But the thing is, you never stopped hanging with that dude because he was just too much fun. Well I'm here to tell you, listening to 91s is kind of like that. It's music that'll aid and abet you in all the bad shit you were probably gonna do anyway…but at least you'll feel good about doing it.

Louie was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, on April 6,1941, and got his first guitar for his ninth birthday, a $13.00 Stella. While other young boys were out having a good time playing ball or fishing, Louie had his ear pinned to the radio for hours a day with his guitar in hand teaching himself to play. He lived and breathed music and by the age of twelve was so good he was in the country band 'Shelby Cooper & the Dixie Mountaineers', was featured every Saturday night on a Grand Ole Opry style show called the Barn Yard Frolics in Little Rock, which was broadcast live throughout the South on KRLA Radio and which featured performers like Johnnie Cash. Not only did young Jr. Shelton (as he was known) back up most of the artists on the show, he was given the opportunity to perform all of the "hot" guitar instrumentals he learned from listening to the recordings of Chet Atkins, Jimmy Bryant, Hank Garland and others. Best of all, Louie was able to graduate musically by purchasing himself a brand new 51 Telecaster.
