Good day!
This CD review was originally published in the January 16, 2014 edition of Blues Blast Magazine. Be sure to check out the rest of the magazine at www.bluesblastmagazine.com
Manhattan Blues Connection out of Brooklyn is a relatively new band on the New York City scene, but do not think for a second that these guys are wet behind the ears, as all of the members are seasoned professionals with an uncanny feel for the blues. The band is led by its founder and drummer, Les Chalimon, and he is joined by Andy Story on vocals and guitar, Darius Reza on bass and Billy “Blue” Blend on keyboards and saxophone. Blend was also responsible for recording this disc at his Blendini Studios, and he mixed it alongside Reza, making this a truly home-brewed project.
Cadillac Blues is their first release, and after two original tracks that were written by Story and Reza, this quartet tears out nine traditional blues songs, all of them in a style that would make it easy to assume this album is a product of the south side of Chicago (though if you listen closely there is also a 1970s NYC influence in there too). It is guitar-heavy music with rich keyboards, smooth horns and a whiskey-voiced frontman that can hang with the best of them.
“Good Loving Woman” is the first track, and it definitely sticks with this theme. Andy Story wrote this one, and it perfectly suits his throaty voice and deft guitar licks. Billy Blend hammers the piano throughout, punctuating the mood with well-placed organ chords and riffs. “You Don’t Know” is the other original, this time penned by Darius Reza. This song has a catchy riff and, once again, Blend kept extra busy behind the mixing board adding multiple layers of sax and keyboards.
The cover tunes are a murderer’s row of blues classics, starting off with “The Things I Used to Do,” which was originally put into the limelight by Guitar Slim back in 1953. Manhattan Blues Connection’s take on it makes it one of the more laid-back versions of this song, with a decidedly smooth (almost jazz-like) vibe. It is fun to hear a more traditional version of this song after years of hearing the Hendrix and Stevie Ray renditions. The band also kicks out a funky version of “Black Cat Bone” that gives the Albert Collins/Robert Cray 1980s hit a good run for the money.
“Driving Wheel” is a straightforward 12-bar blues that highlights the rhythm section of Chalimon and Reza, which is possible due to the fine work that Blend did in recording and mixing Cadillac Blues. Sadly, the run time for this song is under three minutes, but you will not have to go far to find another good song, as there are no bad ones to be found on this disc. In fact, “Black Jack Game,” the next track up, features tasteful interplay between Blend’s honky-tonk piano and Story’s vocals and lead guitar noodling.
The three standout tracks are slow-burning blues songs: Sister Rosetta Tharpe’s “Strange Things Happening,” Jimmy Rogers’ “That’s Alright” and Jessie Mae Robinson’s “Cold, Cold Feeling.” Andy Story’s guitar is the star of these tunes and the listener can hear that he is more than the usual axe-slinger – he has a natural style and a genuine feel for the blues. Of course, it does not hurt that he is accompanied by a first-rate backline with rock solid-drums and bass.
Manhattan Blues Connection’s Cadillac Blues provides over an hour of traditional good-times Chicago blues, and the band’s respect for the history of the blues is evident in the collection of really cool songs that they put together for this project. They are gigging around NYC, so check them out if you are in town, and in the meantime we can only hope that they are back in the studio writing some new music as a follow-up to this solid debut!

Musicians:

Gigi Longu - bass;
Mauro Mulas - keyboards;
Marco Panzino - drums.

Italian band Entity first emerged from Sardinia in 1994, formed by musicians Gigi Longu (bass and guitar) and Mauro Mulas (keyboards) as a result of changing musical directions of their then current progressive band Teathro. This initial pairing resulted in a long suite of music titled `Fantasia' in 1995, and with the later addition of Nicola Desimone (drums), Tore Careddu (bass), Mara Tanchis and Giovanni Deriu (both vocals), a first demo tape of the same name was produced, enhanced with extra new compositions and strongly influenced by Seventies prog and jazz. A few years later in 1999, the group finished a promo - `Il Naufragio della Speranza', a blend of vintage prog with progressive-metal elements, followed by a further demo, `Doppia Entita', that continued to evolve the concept of their previous works. Despite Giovanni departing the band upon completion of this recording, additional musicians in the form of Giuseppe Marras (guitar) and Marco Panzino (drums) joining and some interest and positive reviews in music magazines such as Flash and Metal Hammer, it was to be a collaboration with another band Italian group that properly lay the groundwork for the Entity band.
A merger with Italian band KTL, meaning the addition of guitarist Marco Angioni (formerly of Motivi Per Lingare), as well as a new singer in Sergio Calafiura, led to opening for Jethro Tull in Cagliari in 2001, a new promo CD in 2005 and a further concert appearance at the In Progress festival. With a secure line-up boosted by the addition of guitarist Marcello Mulas, the band, now named Entity, won a competition for best original prog composition at the 2008 In Progress festival. Material for the upcoming debut album were performed in 2010, and February 2014 finally sees the first official album by the band.
The concept album `Il Falso Centro' is now released on Lizard Records. With it's ghostly and eerie front cover, the debut is one of the most confident and boisterous debut albums to appear from a modern RPI band. The onslaught of vintage keyboards and piano recalls other similarly dominated Italian bands such as L'uovo di Colombo and Corte del Miracoli, the heavier noisy aspects remind of the spontaneous outbursts of Panna Fredda and Rustichelli & Bordini, the soft/loud contrasts of Museo Rosenbach, while the classical drama is along the lines of Banco del Mutuo Soccorsso. In addition to typically passionate skilled vocals, a general Emerson, Lake and Palmer/Dream Theater level of bombast and a particular focus on up-front powerful percussion/drumming, this is grandly symphonic progressive music at it's very finest, and Entity continue the recent trend of dynamic modern Italian prog acts.

It's based upon themes with sophisticated melodies and classic movements which are developped by Katsuhiko HAYASHI's keyboards (Notably the fabulous Mellotron). Johnny Casino albums are a treat for the converted and a revelation for those less fortunate. If you’re one of the latter, “Trade Winds” is as good a place as any to start. It’s been way too long between records for Johnny - both this album and its predecessor "Time and Time Again" are old recordings woodshedded for later release - but well worth the wait. The big fella from Sydney’s Northern Beaches makes Spain his home these days, where he plies his dual trades of tattooing and playing music. “Trade Winds” was recorded before he emigrated a couple of years ago with a crack band in North Fremantle, Western Australia. Drummer Warren Hall (The Volcanics, Datura 4, The Drones), a longtime Casino sideman, joined with Martyn P Casey (Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds /The Triffids/Grinderman) played bass. That’s as fine an engine room as you’ll find. The supporting cast is qually familiar; Dom Mariani (The Stems/DM3/ Datura 4), Greg Hitchcock (The Bamboos /You Am I/The Neptunes, Datura 4), John Phatouros (The Volcanics), Richard Lane (The Stems) and sisters Jodi and Carrie Phillis (The Clouds and The Boobytraps respectively) all lent a hand. Casino’s Asteroid B612 bandmate Kenny Watt recorded and mixed the record and expat Detroiter living in France, Jim Diamond, mastered. Not surprisingly, “Trade Winds” sounds huge.
Brooding opener “Ghosts In Your Mind” starts proceedings with a sweep of high drama. The lyric “blood on my tracks and dirt on my hands” is autobiographical - like much of the record - and there's enough ambiguity to allow wide interpretation. That Dylan reference might be coincidental but Richard Lane’s rich Hammond organ gives “You Can’t Give It Away” an Al Kooper touch that references "Highway 61 Revisited". Not to over-egg the analogy but "Trade Winds" has that warm, unvarnished mid-60's feel and was recorded on analogue equipment. Simple songs delivered with passion and feeling sums up the album. "Temptation" and the rousing plea for help "Oh Night" are prime examples. Casino doesn't waste any notes and the embellishments are few and effective - like the girl group harmonies of the Phillis sisters on the latter. Greg Hitchcock's slide adds an edgy touch to the gorgeous surf-tinged instrumental “Parajos Del Mar”. Johnny's wife Mayra lends her backing vocal to the restrained and beautiful "Anytime". It's well placed as the penultima track ahead of the magnificent "Somewhere Lost In Time", another Hammond-assisted, brooding rocker. There are only eight tracks because "Trade Winds" is meant to be heard as a vinyl record. You can grab the LP version from Europe or the CD from Australia via the links below. Whatever your poison, just make sure you get it.

Label: Made in Japan(MJC 1005)

 4. The Cat That Fell In Love - 5:41
 5. Dream Doll - 3:31
 6. Confession Bolero - 8:22
 7. That Sky - 6:23

Remember Pageant, Providence, Mr. Sirius, and the better days of Japanese symphonic rock? Well, don't say they don't make music like that anymore — because Ie Rai Shan is proof true that they do. Take a big, lush, symphonic sound a-la Novella era Renaissance, mix in some harder rock elements, add an outstanding vocalist to match, and blend it with some unique Japanese cultural elements, and you're getting very close to the light. I am frequently reminded of Pageant's La Mosaique de la Reverie or Providence's ...And I'll Recite an Old Myth. Ie Rai Shan ranks among the best of them. At the forefront is vocalist Naomi, exceptional in every way — powerful, intense and compelling, she makes me understand Japanese! Singing solo and harmonizing with herself she brings an uncompromising energy to each of the album's seven tracks. Also in the lineup are veterans Ikkou Nakajima (ex-Pageant) on guitars, and Katsuhiko Hayashi (ex-Mugen) on Hammond XB-2, Prophet 5, Mini-Moog, Poly-6, ARP Pro- Soloist and a whole battery of other keyboards and devices giving their sound a wide array of voices and colors. Katsunori Hamada (ex-Pale Acute Moon) plays electric bass, and Shinjiro Inoue — the only name here besides Naomi that I'm not already familiar with, handles the drum kit. In addition, Junko Minobe (of Cinderella Search) adds violin on a few tracks. Musically, the band covers plenty of ground within the symphonic sphere, and only on a couple tracks with simple boom-bash/neo-prog style drumming do I find any reason to doubt my enthusiasm for this album. Overall, though, this is classic symphonic prog, the way it was meant to be. Fans of any of the aforementioned bands should find much to enjoy in this.

BLUE HEAT is an exciting band from Warrnambool, led by guitarist, singer and songwriter Marco Goldsmith. They are one of the hottest blues bands on the Australian scene, with a big strong sound and an all-original repertoire.
They played their debut gig at the 1991 Ballarat Blues Festival. In 1995 Marco Goldsmith won Best Male Artist and their first album 'Marooned' won ‘Australian Blues Album of the Year'. In 1996, their second album 'Irresistible Behaviour' (remastered 2011 with bonus tracks) also won the award whilst Blue Heat won the 'Australian Blues Band of the Year'.
The big sound of the band, backed by a swinging horn section, fuelled by incendiary guitar and a strong stage presence has seen them in action at many of Australia’s live venues and festivals. In May 1997, one of the finest R&B bands in Australia achieved nationwide acclaim after a memorable night supporting B.B. King.
They’ve since released a live CD – ‘Live at the Continental’ documenting one of Blue Heat's gigs at Prahran's legendary Continental Cafe during this era. Originally recorded and broadcast by ABC Radio National, five of the eleven tracks were brand new songs, never previously released. It showcased the band after countless tours and an acclaimed career. This third album is rounded off by a guest sit-in on three tracks by Jeff Lang who also opened the night for them.
More than seventeen years on, the band still garners accolades as Australia's pre-eminent R&B outfit and have recently thrilled crowds at festivals such as the Queenscliff Music Festival, Echuca-Moama Winter Blues Festival, Warrnambool’s Wunta Fiesta, Mordialloc By The Bay Fine Food Wine & Music Festival, Wangaratta Festival of Jazz & Blues, Thredbo Blues Festival, Port Fairy Folk Music Festival, Bruthen Blues & Arts Festival, Forth Valley Blues Festival, Cairns Blues Festival, Blues At Bridgetown, Traf East Blues, Upwelling Festival Portland, Great Southern Blues Festival Narooma, Moyneyana Festival Port Fairy Blues At The Briars & Yackandandah Folk Festival. Blue Heat is a guaranteed festival highlight.
After performing for more than 20 years, members from the original Marco Goldsmith’s Blue Heat formed in 1991 road-tested a 5 piece line-up in 2013 and it rocked! They were so happy in fact that they decided to proceed in that format. With a new album, 'One Day Too Long' recorded with this line-up in 2014, their first studio recording in almost 20 years will be ready for showcasing in 2015 at gigs and festivals. The band is energised and excited about the future.
The juggernaut which is Blue Heat delivers world-class Rhythm and Blues. Multiple Australian Blues Awards winners, the Age described Blue Heat's second album 'the best RnB record since their first', and their live show as 'carving up visiting acts'. With cracking soloists, killer rhythm section and 'The Hurricane Horns', Blue Heat is a must see.

The Rooster Davis Group is all about delivering an exiting performance full of energy with a high level of musicianship and execution. The group is based around the driving, virtuosic piano that has principally developed in New Orleans, particularly starting with Professor Longhair, James Booker and Fats Domino, and continues today through the current masters such as Allen Toussaint, Dr. John and Jon Cleary. Rooster Davis is known primarily for the way he plays the blues, which most closely resembles the style of Dr. John (Mac Rebennack), although he does play some Dixie and Trad Jazz in his group, the blues can be heard in everything he does.
New Orleans boogie piano maestro Rooster Davis returns with 2015’s For Saints & Sinners. Presented as a high energy power piano trio, with trombone and drums playing some of the blues, funk, and boogie piano music from New Orleans, with Canada’s “songstress of soul”, Ann Vriend, singing on two songs and Rooster Davis’ gritty blues vocals on the rest.

The always formidable Tedeschi Trucks Band has scheduled a February 15th release date for their new and powerful 11-song collection, Signs on Fantasy Records.
Singer/guitarist Susan Tedeschi teams up again with her guitarist husband, Derek Trucks and their entire supremely talented 12-piece band to deliver a timely state-of-the-union message on their fourth studio album, told in their hard-hitting style of Blues and Americana. This is a record that isn’t afraid to explore anxiety and loss while assuring everyone who listens that they, and we, still have plenty of fight left in us. As traditional as the sounds and song shapes might be, this is a band ready to speak honestly about where we are today, and unafraid to take Southern Rock wherever it needs to go next.
Signs is a true band effort, with songwriting duties shared among the band members with additional contributions from Warren Haynes, Oliver Wood and Doyle Bramhall II. Derek Trucks, Jim Scott and Bobby Tis produced the album.
The sly chugging soul beat of “Signs, High Times” eases you into the album sonically but right out of the gate, the lyrics let you know this isn’t going to be an album full of party anthems. The band is going to be speaking from the heart and directly, in no uncertain terms, to the listener. “We been here before. We were just getting ready. No more fooling around.” It is a call to arms to all of us, if we’re ready. It’s a rocking, groove-based number with Susan’s voice soaring and souflul.
The message gets more personal, but no less intense on “I’m Gonna Be There.” Susan uses a smooth R&B slow jam to reassure a nervous lover, or country, that hope is always alive as long as we stick with each other. Heavier still are Susan’s vocals on the emotionally bare “When Will I Begin.” A torch song about more than just a love gone wrong, the arrangement swells and expands setting up a guitar break that packs as much emotion as Susan’s vocals.
A modern undertone runs through the horn-soaked soul groove of “Walk Through This Life,” another popping reminder that hope is always our most powerful and durable weapon. If I didn’t know better, I would swear the song is a cover of some timeless Stevie Wonder classic. The light and airy arrangement of “Strengthen What Remains” makes some of the album’s heaviest lyrics feel more contemplative than damning. Flute solos over cellos tends to do that, but there is no denying the power behind the message, nor the fearlessness of the band to drop this kind of tune in the middle of a collection of more tradition-bound sounds. With vocals like Susan’s, the message goes down easy. And it’s a toe-tapper of the best kind with beautiful chord changes, a short slide solo and guitar riffs by one of the most respected guitar players, Derek Trucks.
Speaking of breaking with tradition, “Still Your Mind” opens with a piano interlude before sliding into some of the most quirky tones and rhythms on the album. The music and lyrics, especially in the chorus, hum with the insistence of a good Liz Phair song and once again the emotionally unsettled lead guitar break captures the emotional tone of the song perfectly.
Doing an emotional 180 in an album themed by heaviness and loss, “Hard Case” positively bubbles with hope and reminders of what good times feel like. By the time the funky keyboard break bounces in like another Stevie Wonder cameo, you’ll discover your head was already bobbing. The band gets back to heavier subjects and sounds on the bluesy “Shame.” While Susan’s lyrics call down shame on those who are “poisoning the well” and “murdering the truth” the band unleashes some gut-punch funk in the bridges and choruses that sounds like a protest that is teetering on the edge of becoming a riot, and what could feel more timely than that?
On the wistful and swoony “All The World” Susan’s yearning and simply beautiful vocals lean into the sweet and simple groove guided by the horn section and filled out by some exceptional organ work. The band picks up the pace on the big sounds of “They Don’t Shine,” which finds every corner of the band playing hard, and with intent, on a traditional mid-tempo rocker, like they’re going to lift you out of your seats no matter how weird, or bad, the news night be.
This is an album clearly flavored by loss, angst, and apprehension, often on a big scale. Using their formidable chops and obvious chemistry, Tedeschi Trucks Band does a good job of capturing the overall vibe of the country here in 2019. We remember better times and know they can return, but we also know it ain’t gonna be easy. The collection, however, closes with the extremely personal. “The Ending” is a tribute song to Col. Bruce Hampton, a friend and mentor to many in the band, who died while playing on stage with Derek and Susan, during his 70th birthday celebration/concert. As always, when a song or story is this specific, it somehow manages to tap into something universal – about the nature of life, the

When Katy Mitchell was 15, she entered Ocracoke’s Soundside Studios to record her first album, “Baby It’s You,” which was released at the ripe-old age of 16. By most accounts, her first recording is a fantastic album featuring songs many of which harken back to the 60s and 70s (“The Letter,” “Big Yellow Taxi,” “Ode to Billie Jo” and “The Times They Are a-Chan¬gin”). Her rendition of George Gershwin’s stirring “Summertime” is one of my all-time favorites. So it has been with high expectations that many of us have waited about nine years for her next album which was released the week of this year’s Ocrafolk Festival. The verdict: “Katy Sings the Blues” is well-worth the long wait. Starting with the T-Bone Walker classic, “Stormy Monday,” her sultry, slow bluesy voice does justice to all of the songs on the album. As the album title suggests, there are plenty of blues classics including Willie Dixon’s “Spoonful” and “Got My Mojo Working” by Preston Foster. In addi¬tion to Katy’s great singing, both the arrangements of the songs and the musicians’ performances are first rate. “Lou Castro in particular, should be noted for his great guitar w o r k – b o t h rhythms and leads – on this album,” noted Gary Mitchell who, with Matt Mitchell, co-produced the album and also performed. Fiddler Dave Tweedie and even Katy’s mother, Kitty Mitchell, can be heard on the album.
Here are the other musicians: Michael O’Neal and Matt Mitchell on guitar, Robbie Link plays upright Bass, Jubal Creech handles the percussions and Joe Littell plays Dobro guitar and harmonica.
The album concludes with Russell Newell’s “Clamrake,” a song Katy has frequently performed over the years at the Deep Water Theater and more recently in the Ocrachicks concert at this year’s Ocrafolk Festival. ~Peter Vankevich

Willie Buck Way is the name of an honorary street named after Willie Buck in his hometown, Chicago AND it’s the name of his new album on Delmark Records. Accompanied by Billy Flynn, Thaddeus Krolicki, guitars; Scott Dirks, Harmonica Hinds, harmonica; Johnny Iguana, piano; Bob Stroger, bass and Jimmi Mayes, drums Buck delivers twelve new original songs along and five covers.
Buck’s previous Delmark album, Cell Phone Man, debuted on Living Blues Radio Chart in the #1 position in the December, 2012 issue along with an 8-page feature story and a glowing album review.
“His vocals are sinewy and expressive (he demonstrates a powerful upper range that even a lot of his longtime fans will find surprising)…postwar Chicago blues have long been, and remain, a contemporary music to him, and he delivers them with both urgency and elan.”
Willie Buck Way also features notes and original artwork by Plastic Crimewave (Steve Krakow) from the Secret History of Chicago Music series.

Jeff Ross, a veteran of many bands in many styles, recorded a blues album, not a combo platter. Sure, there are tracks that offer varying shades, but if you bought this album, a) you?re probably wanting to hear some blues, and b) you?re into (and might even play) guitar. And so, a blues guitar album you shall get.
AUSTIN, TEXAS---The connection between classic cowpunk creators Rank & File and the cosmopolitan creativity of the Gypsy jazz unit Club Django is not an obvious one, unless, of course, you're familiar with guitarist JEFFREY P. ROSS, a veteran virtuoso who delivers all hues of blues on his debut disc as a leader.
Ross and his guitar have been involved in all manner of inventive and unusual musical situations but after a couple of decades of brightening up the sound of others he's finally stepping into the spotlight in his own right with a sparkling collection of enlightened blues.
Ross has recorded with California guitar-slingers the Hellecasters and Austin's eclectic roots aggregation the Asylum Street Spankers, as well as working with a trio of distinctive, if admittedly dissimilar, female vocalists; bawdy blues belter Candye Kane, rockabilly rebel Rosie Flores and alt-country angel Kelly Willis.
And, befitting a guitarist who chose the blues as the context for his first solo outing, Ross naturally has deep and diverse blues experience, including work with West Coast blues stalwarts such as hard-blowing James Harman and the late William Clarke.
But all those musical affiliations---and they're by no means the full extent of Ross's career accomplishments---serve merely as a provocative prelude for "My Pleasure", the first recording to feature Ross's guitar work under his own name in the service of his own tunes.
"My Pleasure" features an outstanding cast of Austin musicians, including multi-talented bluesman Guy Forsyth, string wizard Erik Hokkanen, T-Birds pianist Gene Taylor, and vocalist Major Burkes, for starters, but it is Ross who is---at long last---front and center throughout.
Much of the material comes from Ross and all of it is sonically tailored to his specifications, making the album's title a simple statement of fact. "It's exactly what I wanted to do," Ross explains. "I was allowed full freedom to please myself musically, so it's the tunes I wanted to do and they're done the way I wanted to play and record them."
What brought Ross his musical pleasure was playing the blues. His expansive definition of blues, however, takes the music in a multitude of musical directions. Each is intriguing and all are interlaced with uniformly excellent instrumental innovation but "My Pleasure" is not just a guitar showcase.
Ross has written and assembled solid songs and he and several guest vocalists, including Seth Walker, Mark Goodwin, Nick Curran and J. Jaye Smith, in addition to Forsyth and Burkes, meld them to the music with superlative results. It is undoubtedly blues straight from the heart but its stylistic range and deft delivery create new hues as enjoyable as they are exciting.
So, make "My Pleasure" your own. Give it a listen and the odds are good you'll give it another. And another.

Lights of Change is a double live CD recorded on our 2018 European Summer Tour.
Disc One is recorded at the Night of the Prog festival at Loreley Amphitheatre on Sunday July 15th 2018 and includes almost the entire set from that show. Recorded in front of the biggest audience we've ever played to with a brilliant atmosphere. The set featured two epic tracks - Pages of Stone from 'The Second Hand' and the seminal 'Disinfected and Abused' from 230503, as well as other live favourites throughout our career.
Disc Two was recorded the week earlier on July 7th 2018 at a Progfrog show at 't Blok in Nieuwerkerk a/d iJssel in the Netherlands. We played an extra long set at that show and the second half of the show featured the first ever full performance of our second album, 'A Tower of Silence' outside of Sydney. That performance of the complete album makes up the whole of disc two.
