Size: 113,1 MB
Label: Olive Tree Music
Styles: Jazz/Guitar Jazz

Tracks Listing:
 1. Sonnymoon For Two - 4:01
 2. Manha De Carnaval - 5:58
 3. Minority - 4:38
 4. It Could Happen To You - 5:38
 5. Melissa - 5:11
 6. Two-Part Strut - 6:11

 8. Cianciana - 4:35
 9. Jersey Bounce - 6:13

With the release of his debut CD, the “Warren Greig Trio”, Toronto jazz guitarist Warren Greig steps out from the shadows of sideman and into the spotlight as leader. It is a role that appears to suit him just fine as he leads his organ trio on an enthusiastic, inviting, and musically expressive date of nine tunes, (six standards and three originals penned by Greig) that showcases Greigs’ deep-rooted appreciation for the straight-ahead jazz line. From the first tune, “Sonnymoon for Two” to the last, “Jersey Bounce”, Greig’s warm and woody tone (played on a gorgeous vintage ES-175) swings with fervor and delight as he exhibits a strong melodic playing style that is exceedingly musical, developed, and right on the money. From burn (“Minority”, “Melissa”), to bluesy (“Sonnymoon for Two”, “Jersey Bounce”), to bossa (“Manha De Carnival”), Greig is a dynamic guitarist who sounds right at home with the tunes he has chosen for this date. His playing style is fluid and smooth as he navigates through the changes with a confidence and ease that speaks of musical maturity and skill which is what I enjoyed most about Greig’s playing. His lines are clearly developed with a logical direction that speaks volumes about dedication to one’s craft. This is player who has obviously listened to the best and has learned his lessons well. Plus he can write cool tunes (“Melissa”, “Two-Part Strutt” and “Cianciana”). It’s no wonder he was a popular sideman for so long.
And speaking of sidemen, where would the “Trio” be without the remaining members of Greig’s group: Paul Wiggins on organ and Harry Ellis on drums. Both players take their roles as musical supporters very seriously as they lay down the harmonic and rhythmic foundations for Greig’s melodic musings. And in true organ trio fashion, organ and guitar share the solo spotlight as each player lends his own particular personality to the changes with Wiggins’ displaying an amusing penchant for quoting other tunes in his solos (check out Greig’s original composition “Melissa” for a taste.) Through all this, Ellis keeps the time steady and the tunes energized, while getting to shine during a few “trading fours” sections, making this CD a definite enjoyable listen.
If you are a student or fan of jazz guitar and appreciate those who are trying to keep the jazz flame burning bright, then pick up a copy of Warren Greig’s “Warren Greig Trio”. It makes a wonderful addition to any music lover’s collection.

Aynsley Lister - Eyes Wide Open

Bitrate: 320K/s
Year: 2016
Time: 65:40
Size: 150,5 MB
Label: Straight Talkin' Records
Styles: Blues/Blues Rock
Art: Front

Tracks Listing:
 1. All Of Your Love - 4:41
 2. Everything I Have To Give - 5:41
 3. Il Grande Mafioso - 7:07
 4. Won't Be Taken Down - 5:56
 5. Time - 4:51
 6. Dishevelled - 5:26
 7. Troubled Soul (Intro)/Kalina - 5:57
 8. Handful Of Doubt - 4:53
 9. Right As Rain - 5:01
10. Other Part Of Me - 5:08
11. Stay - 6:01
12. Hold You To It (Bonus Track) - 4:52

Aynsley Lister has a lot going for him.  He’s a top quality singer, with a clear voice that’s easy on the ear.  As a guitar player, he’s even better, capable of real fireworks.  When he puts his mind to it, he’s an imaginative songwriter.  He has a crack band, with Bennett Holland on keys, Boneto Dryden on drums, and Steve Amadeo on bass.  Oh yeah, and he’s a good-looking sod too.
Eyes Wide Open is an album that shows what Lister is capable of, with songs that explore different avenues and are delivered with style, but the opening couple of tracks show off some typical Lister qualities.  ‘All Your Love’
enters with pulsing bass and a steady beat over which some injections of guitar climb, but it’s the clear and easy vocal that marks him out – Lister has a distinctively English singing voice, lacking any American affectations.
‘Everything I’ll Have To Give’ meanwhile, is a piece of soulful blues that’s right in his wheelhouse, with a rolling, easy rhythm and a piercing guitar solo with enough twists and turns to keep Jeremy Clarkson happy.
But he mixes it up a bit after that.  ‘Il Grande Mafioso’ has a cinematic vibe, with a Mediterranean feel instigated by the acoustic guitar intro, some seriously twangy guitar work, and piano lines that evoke the Harry Lime Theme.  Later, the halting and moody ‘Dishevelled’ recalls his previous cover of Nina Simone’s ‘I’m Feeling Good’.  It may not have the climactic peaks of the latter, but it does have a sinuous guitar solo, woven around the melody and elaborated with changes of pace.  It also evokes a late night sleazy bar encounter beautifully, Lister’s languid vocal perfectly.
In between these, Lister occupies more straightforward territory with ‘Won’t Be Taken Down’ and ‘Time’.  The former has a restrained verse, offset by a surging chorus with seriously big guitar chords bringing the oomph.  The latter is light and sprightly, with twitchy guitar licks and one of the best hooks of the album in its soaring chorus.
For me, the second half of the album doesn’t quite maintain sustain the standard set over these first six songs.  This isn’t to say that the track list includes any duds; Lister is far too professional for that, and there are always interesting things going on, not least in his guitar work.  But a ruthless advisor might have advised pruning a couple of the slighter songs in order to push the quality threshold to the max.
As I say though, he still does interesting things.  ‘Troubled Soul (Intro)’ is a delicate, Mark Knopfler-ish guitar vignette. ‘Kalina’ has a lovely, mellow guitar refrain, and here as elsewhere the interplay of Lister’s guitar with Bennett Holland’s keys is delightful.  I’d have liked a stronger melody and chorus, but it still achieves lift off by means of Lister’s guitar solo.  Meanwhile ‘Other Part Of Me’ is a relationship celebration with a tune and arrangement that bathe the lyrics in sunshine – the Commodores ‘Easy Like Sunday Morning’ springs to mind.
Aynsley Lister isn’t easy to pigeonhole.  He shifts shape fluidly around a soulful, bluesy, rocky style.  I’m beginning to think he might be Britain’s answer to Robben Ford – someone who wants to push the songwriting envelope and find new ways of expressing himself, and has the top-drawer musicianship to match.

Mary Jo’s newly released CD entitled “Mary Jo Curry” has been getting significant air play and rave reviews. Peter Merrett, PBS106.7, Melbourne, Australia said, “Mary Jo Curry was born to sing the Blues because this voice cannot be taught to you but rather has to come from deep down in one’s soul. Apart from possessing a mesmerizing voice Curry can write one helluva’ Blues song.” Blues Blast Magazine said, “Mary Jo Curry is a powerful debut release of the first order.” The CD was produced by the incomparable James Armstrong. The album provides the listener a great cross section of the type of music you will hear when you attend a Mary Jo Curry live performance. The CD features 4 original songs written or co-written by Mary Jo, and 5 outstanding blues compositions where Mary Jo puts her stamp on songs previously recorded by female blues greats that have inspired her. For three weeks the album hit #1 on the RMR Top 50 Classic Blues Album chart. That’s Three songs in the Top 10! Mary Jo’s talent has been recognized by having the honor of receiving the 2016 Kankakee Area Music Awards, “Best Blues Artist.”   Ms. Curry’s college training was in theater performance and voice. Her professional career started as lead singer in a popular rock cover band. While doing a show with a local theater group, Mary Jo was “discovered” by theater talent scouts who wanted Mary Jo to audition for a role in a major touring troupe; this audition led to a stint as a professional theater performer. Five years ago she fell in love with blues music, and was soon invited to join a Central Illinois blues band. The band quickly realized that Mary Jo was the real deal, and the band restructured itself to feature Mary Jo as the lead vocalist.  Mary Jo is joined onstage by her husband, Michael Rapier, who plays lead guitar, acts as band leader, and shares in the songwriting duties. The last 5 years have been the incubator to allow Mary Jo to shape her sound and her direction as a blues performer, and she is now ready to bring her blues to the world.

14. Headin' Out - 5:14

Harpdog Brown is one of Canada's most distinctive blues singers & harp masters. He keeps it traditional, adding his own flair, energy & humour to great material presented with swinging phrasing & solid deep playing. -Holger Petersen, SiriusXM, CKUA, CBC
Harpdog Brown's latest release, "What It Is...", marks my second introduction to his music, of which his previous release "Naturally", I wrote, "Naturally" was a great introduction to Harpdog Brown, for me and although I am not familiar with his other albums I still believe this may be one of his best, so far." "Naturally" may of indeed been one of Harpdog Brown's best, but after listening to "What It Is...", I have no doubt that this Harp Driven Beauty is the best stuff he has ever done and it is not just me, but many other reviewers and critics are also saying it.
"What It Is..." consists of 14 great Tracks, clocking in at just under an hour. Of the 14 Tracks, 10 are originals, with 9 written or co-written by Harpdog Brown, of which he partners with John R. Hunter on 6 Tracks, J. Hoar on 2, and wrote one Track solo. The title Track, "What It Is...", was written by Wayne Berezan who used to play guitar with Harpdog Brown in the original Bloodhounds, back in 1990-92 and has written many songs tailored for Brown. For the 4 Covers, Harpdog Brown chose some really nice ones, which included, "Git Ta Gittin' Baby" (Wynonie Harris), "Blue Lights" (Little Walter), "All Night Boogie" (Howlin' Wolf), and "In My Younger Days" (Sonny Boy Williamson II).
Joining Harpdog Brown (Harmonica/Vocals) on "What It Is...", were a trio of great musicians, which included, Co-writer and Drummer John R. Hunter, Bassist George Fenn, and Guitarist Jordan Edmonds. In addition to Co-writer and Drummer, John R. Hunter also Produced this album with Harpdog Brown. "What It Is..." is dedicated to the memory of Greg Kennedy, of which you can read a nice write-up about Greg here... http://rcmpsite.com/index.php?news_action=display&news_id=5969
With the name Harpdog Brown, one would expect to hear a truckload of Harp playing on his albums, and that is something that you get in aces on "What It Is...", and that is something I was really happy to hear as I felt the Harp was a little lacking on his previous release, "Naturally". For "What It Is...", Harpdog pulled out the old Harp and played the heck out of it throughout nearly all of the album, showing us all why he is considered one of Canada' Premier Harp players.
Harpdog Brown did not make choosing 3 favorites, an easy task, as this is one of the more solid albums I have come across in a while, never the less I chose, the opening Track "Doncha Know I Loves You", Track 7, "Facebook Woman", and Track 8 "Blue Lights".
Opening Tracks either get my attention and whet my appetite for what is to come, or they leave me hanging, wondering if I am actually going to love the album that much. "Doncha Know I Loves You", caught my attention right away as the first notes coming my way were from Harpdog Brown's Harp and I knew this song and perhaps this album was going to be great. This one came across with a really rock solid, no fuss beat, that showed off a really tight band at it's very best.
With the creation that is Facebook, we also now encounter a few songs about it, of which "Facebook Woman", is the newest one I have heard. Again this one, as with the opening Track, starts off with some super infectious Fat Harp Work from Harpdog Brown. This beauty includes an almost one minute solo that all of us Harp Lovers will truly enjoy.
Harp Lovers will also truly enjoy my third favorite, the Cover of Little Walter's "Blue Lights". This beauty is 4 minutes and 28 seconds of nothing less than Blues Harmonica Heaven, as Harpdog brown plays his heart out, and in doing so, does more than justice to one of Little Walter's finest tunes. Wow...
"What It Is..." is "What It Is...", and to me "What It Is..." was simply fantastic, showcasing one of the best Canadian Harp players around, at the very top of his game. Kudo's also to the super exceptional players that Harpdog Brown chose for this little journey.
5***** for "What It Is..." Thoroughly Enjoyed and Highly Recommended... Harmonica Driven Blues At It's Best...

Classic blues and quirky originals recorded live in performance and live in the studio by a unique duo that sounds like a quartet; this is blues for both fans of the genre and those who don't think they like the Blues, yet.
Whiteboy Slim – QUEEN STREET BLUES: Wow – it’s hard to believe it’s been six albums from Slim… super high-energy blues, with some excellent guitar lead work! For those concerned about “language”, this is on th’ salty side, but nothin’ too bad. Songs like “Narcissistic Blues” will make sure th’ thrill is still there (whether you’re a narcissist or not). The opening title track, “Queen Street Blues“, is about as down & phonk-ee as you’ll hear this year (or next, for that matter). From a “pure blues” standpoint, it is “New Rising Sun” that got my vote for personal favorite of the eleven tracks offered up… down, out & gut-throat, to be sure. If you’re lookin’ for sonics that will “turn your blues on”, you’ll hear (right away) why I declare this MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for blues lovers; “EQ” (energy quotient) rating is 4.98. Get more information at the Whiteboy Slim official pages. Rot cod Zzaj Improvijazznation #158"
This year Whiteboy Slim returns with even more high-energy Blues--12 tracks of classic and original Blues, (and an occasional trip into Reggae, Rockabilly, and Jazz), plus two bonus tracks. Everything was recorded live--in the studio and at gigs by producer Larry Gusaas. Like 2015's "Queen Street Blues" this recording is made with the amazing one-man rhythm section Dustin Bowyer, who plays bass and drums at the same time. It is easy to forget that there are only two people playing when you listen to the big full sound these two put out.
This is music that is raw and real and real with very few edits or studio tricks --with the exception of the extended version of "Man With a Gun-- which shows off the production skills of producer Larry Gusaas in a collage of outtakes from various sessions.
For Blues traditionalists there are covers of songs by Howling Wolf, Muddy Waters, Elmore James, Curtis Jones, and Sonny Boy Williamson. The originals run from straight-ahead Blues ("I've Cried Enough") to Americana ("The Morning Light") to Reggae ("Man With a Gun"), covering not only the themes of lost love and hard times usually associated with the Blues, but also exploring Psychoanalysis ("The Couch"), love with a transgender person ("Sing Hallelujah (Anthem))", gun violence and terrorism ("Man With A Gun"), and existential angst ("The Morning Light" and "I Ain't Got Time To Be Angry With You Tonight".)
It also includes the first instrumental recorded by Whiteboy Slim ("Rosie's Rumble" --a tribute to Link Wray.)
As John Vermilyeaonce wrote in a review on The Blues Underground Network "We no doubt have our share of Artists out there today that really bring something special to the world of Blues, and Whiteboy Slim is certainly no exception."

Paul Brown - One Way Back

Bitrate: 320K/s

10. Heaven - 4:39

The term “Renaissance Man” dates back to the time of Leonardo da Vinci, who was described as a man of “unquenchable curiosity” and “feverishly inventive imagination.” Paul Brown‘s four decade journey through the worlds of pop, R&B and jazz is the modern day musical equivalent. Starting as a drummer, he became an engineer for R&B legends (Diana Ross, Luther Vandross, Aretha Franklin) before evolving into a two time Grammy winning urban jazz producer (with over 60 #1 radio airplay hits) and finally a popular guitarist, artist and performer in his own right.
While keeping his trademark deep funk and cool urban vibes flowing, Brown taps deeper than ever before into his lifelong blues influences, which includes a foundational passion for greats like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Little Feat and B.B. King. This edge is immediately apparent on the album’s lead single, a bold and fiery re-imagining of The Crusaders’ soul-jazz classic “Put It Where You Want It,” which he describes as a “combination of Wes Montgomery and Larry Carlton,” the latter who played on the original recording of the tune.
“Even after all these years,” he says, “I truly feel that I’m continuing to evolve as a guitarist, and I’m glad the way the genre is right now allows artists to follow the deeper passions of their musical hearts more than ever before. With each album, I feel like I’ve grown as a musician and artist, and I’m a far different player than I was when I recorded Up Front. When that came out, I had never performed a live show as a guitarist. You can practice an instrument in a room all you want, but until you play live, you don’t acquire a full level of skills. All of that gigging has helped me grow technically, and playing what I have imagined in my head is a lot easier than it used to be. The freedom and confidence I have gained from those translates to my personal development and allows me to bring fresh new ideas into the studio.”

The Ever Expanding Elastic Waste Band - Members of Morphine with Jeremy Lyons

Musicians:
Dana Colley - electric baritone sax;
Jeremy Lyons - guitar, 2-string slide bass;
Jerome Deupree - drums.

Dana Colley and Jerome Deupree, the surviving members of Morphine, the seminal progressive rock band of the 1990s, have since played in several projects, but it wasn’t until the arrival of the New Orleans musician Jeremy Lyons on the Boston scene that they revisited the power trio format of two-string bass, baritone sax, and drums that was the signature sound of the original band.
Members of Morphine and Jeremy Lyons draw from the Morphine songbook as well as from Lyons’ deep immersion in Delta blues and New Orleans styles. Purists will wonder about a project minus the late Mark Sandman, Morphine’s founder, but as Kier Byrnes of Noise Magazine says, these are “new takes on old songs, and the result is pure magic. The songs sound amazing and I’m grinning from ear to ear with pure joy.”
The trio, which also plays under the moniker The Ever Expanding Elastic Waste Band, reaches far beyond simple nostalgia with their current work. They blend the bluesy base of Morphine’s grooves and the eclectic rhythms of Lyons’ Deltabilly fusion. Throw in a heavy dose of psychedelic rock and you get Morphine gone even swampier down-home. Or Delta blues in dreamland. In other words, Psycho-Delta Low Rock.
Colley (baritone sax) and Deupree (drums) backed Mark Sandman on the group’s debut record, Good, and the break-out follow-up, Cure for Pain. Deupree was replaced by Billy Conway but returned to play along side him on the final album, The Night. The distinctive sound that Colley gets from his electronically-treated bari sax mark such projects as Twinemen and A.K.A.C.O.D . Deupree’s improvisational prowess and super-charged drumming call to mind the likes of Mitch Mitchell or Bill Bruford and has been a staple of the Jeff Robinson Trio at the Lizard Lounge Poetry Night for over ten years. He’s also appeared with Orchestra Morphine, Either Orchestra, and The Humans.
|In July 1999 Sandman collapsed on stage while playing with the group at the Nel Nom Del Rock Festival in Palestrina, Italy. He died of a massive heart attack at age 46. Ten years later, Colley was invited to bring a band back to play the very stage on which Sandman had passed away. Colley and Deupree had been playing with Lyons at various gigs, so they asked him to go, even though he had never before played a Morphine song. Yet the three rehearsed the catalogue, and Lyons commissioned a two-string slide bass a la Sandman. The show was a great success, and the band continues to play together.
Lyons, a master slide guitarist, singer, and songwriter, played the streets and clubs of New Orleans from 1992 until he was washed out by Hurricane Katrina. In this project he plays electric guitar and two-string slide bass. He invented Deltabilly, a rockabilly/surf/Delta blues fusion, which specializes in fast finger picking and slide guitar. He met Deupree and Colley while restarting his career after his relocation to Boston (chronicled in the song, “Hurricane”). Deupree quickly became his first-string drummer, and Colley soon joined in. “Dana extended a hand of friendship. He loves New Orleans, and understood my post-Katrina state of mind,” Lyons says.
Some collaborations seem fated. Colley still has a journal from an early ’90s Morphine tour in which he took notes about a band playing on the streets of the French Quarter. Lyons appears in a Polaroid picture of the band that accompanies the notes, although the two didn’t actually meet until 2005. When Deupree listened to some of Lyons’ earlier discs (Count Your Chickens Before They Hatch; Live at the Dragon’s Den; Jeremy Lyons and the Deltabilly Boys; and Live at Fribourg), he recognized the hand of his old friend Mark Bingham, the renowned producer. In 2010 they added New Orleans horns to some tracks for the new disc with Bingham, which brought that connection full circle. The trio plays regularly in the Boston area and makes selective appearances nationally.
The debut CD features live and studio tracks, four of Sandman's songs re-worked, three originals by Lyons, as well as live improvisations.

New York-based session guitarist. Sharing the very same birthday as Jackie Wilson, Jimmy Spruill was born into a sharecropping family in North Carolina. As a budding guitarist he was weaned on equal proportions of country music and rhythm and blues and by the time he made it to New York in 1955, he'd progressed from a cigar box and an elastic band to a Fender Telecaster and Standel amplifier. He went on to work 'A' team sessions for the likes of King Curtis, Little Anthony, the Shirelles, Tarheel Slim and Elmore James, in addition to putting out singles under his own name, most of which came out on the labels of Bobby and Danny Robinson : Fire, Fury, Everlast, Enjoy and VIM. In May 1959, "The Happy Organ" by Dave "Baby" Cortez shot to the # 1 spot on the Billboard charts, before giving way only one week later to Wilbert Harrison's "Kansas City". As it happens, the storming guitar soloist on both records was Jimmy Spruill, who for session-fees-only was notching up the notable achievement of playing on back-to-back No. 1 hits. He achieved a hat-trick of number ones when he played on Bobby Lewis's "Tossin' and Turnin'" in 1961 and just failed on another ocasion when the Shirelles' "Dedicated To The One I Love" peaked at # 3 in 1961. Another well-known recording on which Spruill plays is "Fanny Mae" by Buster Brown, a # 1 R&B hit in early 1960. Spruill was a great showman, playing guitar with his teeth. His most interesting solo record is probably "Hard Grind" (Fire 1006), which was originally issued as the B-side to "Kansas City March". Tiring of session work, Spruill formed an East Coast nightclub trio in the mid-sixties, with singer Tommy Knight and drummer Popsy Dixon. He died from a heart attack while travelling on a bus from Florida back to his home in the Bronx, New York, in 1996.

Passionate, soul drenched vocals and paint peeling guitar work. Shufflin' The Blues is the third official release from Holly Hyatt and Jon Burden.
Formerly known as Holly and Jon and billing themselves as primarily an acoustic act, Holly Hyatt and Jon Burden showcase the electric side of their music with this album. By plugging their instruments in and adding a percussionist, the sound of the duo leans more towards that of the west side Chicago blues trio's of the early 60's (Otis Rush, Magic Sam, Freddie King). Recorded live in front of an intimate audience, the result is a 9 song tour DE' force that pays tribute to Chicago blues, Delta blues and home style original blues.
The album contains 5 electric tracks, 3 acoustic tracks and a slide guitar piece. The first 2 tracks, the Muddy Waters classic, Blow Wind Blow and Memphis Slim's, Mother Earth Blues, are pure Chicago blues and Hyatt and Burden share the lead vocal while Holly anchors the bottom end with her solid, shuffling bass lines. Allowing Jon to lay down some tasty and fiery lead guitar work.
Holly Hyatt and Jon Burden are based out of British Columbia, Canada and work as an acoustic duo and electric trio. They have played on shows with artists such as, Harry Manx. David Gogo, Paul Reddick, Jeff Healey, Colin James, Jim Byrnes, Ruthie Foster, Sonny Rhodes, Rita Chiarelli and Leon Russell.

Kody has an unmistakable affinity and abundant natural gifts for all things blues and real-deal classic rock that you'd swear he's thrice his age. Yet, Kody somehow manages to conjure up fresh perspective and renewed vitality to the tried and true--fueled in large measure by his equally tuneful as soulful vocals and smooth, late-sixties guitar delivery. That geezers and hipsters alike will be singing along with catchy-a** chorus after catchy-a** chorus is a good thing. If you were fed the likes of Lynyrd Skynyrd and CCR as a child, you'll be wanting a 'nother few rounds of what Nick Kody is proudly serving! Check him out live and on upcoming releases!"

Guitar driven, new all original American Roots music ranging from Memphis Soul the New Orleans 2nd Line featuring lush vocals, dance-able rhythms, hook-ey lyrics and even a tuba! You'll be singing along with these tunes the first time you hear them!
“The Stars Motel,” features 4 guitarists, famous in the world of blues, who each stayed at Liz Mandeville’s recording studio while co-writing the music for this project with her. They are: Guitarist for the late Phil Guy, Dario Lombardo (Turin, Italy), Blues Blast Award Nominee, Rochelle Coba (Miami), Scott Ellison (Tulsa) and Billy Branch alum, Minoru Maruyama (Japan). Doug Deming (Tampa) has also contributed a solo. Liz not only produced the project and plays guitar and washboard, she is handling all the vocals!
It started in 2013 when Scott Ellison called Liz. The two artists had met when each released an album on the Earwig Label in 2008. Scott said he and his band were coming to play in Chicago and had no hotel rooms. Liz said “You can stay in my studio, but the price of admission is we write and record 3 tunes while you’re here.” Scott agreed and the first three tunes were made. Scott’s Clapton-esque rock influenced blues married nicely with Liz’s witty lyrics for a trio of edgy swinging tunes.
The following year, Dario Lombardo was booked to play the Chicago Blues Fest. His accommodations fell through at the last minute and Liz stepped up and offered Dario the same deal. “You can stay but we have to write and record 3 tunes.” Liz and Dario did three weeks of gigs, drank a lot of red wine and wrote three great tunes including Reefer and a Glass of Wine that features a solo from Tampa’s master of Swing, Doug Deming.
Later that year Rachelle Coba, who Liz had met when both women were in Clarksdale playing the Juke Joint Festival, called to say her debut CD had been nominated for a Blues Blast Award. She said she could get from Miami to Chicago, but where the heck was Carbondale? Liz told her “Come to Chicago a few days early, lets write 3 tunes and then I’ll drive you to Carbondale!” So it was on! Rachelle’s collaboration yielded a trio that rings with Delta influence, from the New Orleans 2nd Line flavor of Everybody Knew But Me to the hauntingly hypnotic Hill Country Groove of River of Blood.
Nine tunes was just a bit short for a CD, so Liz approached Japanese born Minoru Maruyama, who had played on her 2014 Heart ‘O’ Chicago release. Minoru gave Liz the beautiful ballad that became One Dance, complete with a Memphis Horn treatment, as well as the West side blues firecracker, What Is Truth.
Liz spent the last 6 months in the studio with engineer Jim Godsey who has worked on all Liz’s projects since the ‘90’s. Adding Horns, keys, blues harp, even tuba and washboard! The result is a party on a platter! Check in to the Stars Motel and see for yourself!!

Youenn Migaud - guitar, bass, vocals;
Antoine Tharreau - keyboards;
Herve Launay - saxophones, keyboards, vocals;
Charlotte Merand- electric violin, vocals;
Cedric Lucas- drums, vocals.

French jazz-rock psychedelic band was founded in 2004 in Rennes, Bretagne. At the core of the group, there are three high school buddies, Youenn Migaud (guitar), Herve Launay (sax) and Antoine Tharreau (keyboards) who, after some years of diverse musical experiences, together or separately, decided to form L'OEIL DU SOURD (EYE OF THE DEAF). They were joined in 2007 by drummer Cedric Lucas shortly thereafter by Charlotte Merand (electric violin) and Mathilde Clavier (vocals and clarinet).
They mixed rock energy with jazz sax sound and structural freedom. If certain parts, often shorter, can claim more or less of jazz, the longest lead us in a mighty maze in which one loses some its bearings. The music includes saxophone, drums, keyboards, guitar, violin, clarinet and vocals and is a sound of prog rock jazz fusion of the 70's (without being that music in reality). This touch is brought by including all sounds of vintage keyboards. Classically trained Matilda Clavier distils a song lyric from the most original opera and vocal experiments. All this is caused by tremendous energy, a surprising strength of conviction that is contagious and contaminating (perhaps it is the origin of their name out) with an amazing mix sounds, and vintage and electronic. Perhaps we could situate this group unclassifiable - somewhere near Rock in Opposition, in a niche of progressive jazz and experimental avant-garde.
Some line up changes happened: near Migaud, Launay and Clavier from the early line up, there are two new members, Julia Robin (bass) and Tony Peoc'h (drums). Their first album ''Un?'' was released in 2009.

Michael White & The White is an American hard rock combo and occasional Led Zeppelin cover band, formed around singer Michael White. White started his career in 1973, when he played with Los Angeles-based The Boyz, in a line-up which included Mick Brown and George Lynch (both of later Dokken fame). He is further credited as being a vocalist in early incarnations of London and Motley Crue. White formed The White in 1977 with guitarist Lanny Cordola (of Giuffria, House of Lords). Since then The White has toured extensively through North America and Europe. The band received positive reviews, including from the Toronto Star which claimed they were "remarkably similar to the legendary Led Zeppelin...combining strong visual impersonations with a solid and accurate sound." In 1986 Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin assisted in securing White a recording contract with Atlantic Records. The debut album was recorded at Musicland Studios in Munich Germany (where Led Zeppelin recorded their Presence album) with legendary producer Reinhold Mack at the board. The album was well received, earning a five "K" review from Derek Oliver of Kerrang magazine. The album featured W.A.S.P. guitarist Randy Piper, Alan St Johns of the Billy Squier band, Bobby Chouinard of the Gary Moore band and Danny Bilan of Moxy.  The White then recorded two CDs for the Griffin Music label: Michael White/The White (1990) and Michael White Plays the Music of Led Zeppelin (1994), which were later re-released as a double-album under the title A Tribute To Led Zeppelin - Studio Sessions, Volume One & Volume Two.
White has been a regular performer and guest on Toronto's Q107 rock radio station's Derringer show.In 2005 Cleopatra Records approached White to record on a Led Zeppelin tribute album entitled "Led Box" which also featured Eric Bloom of Blue Oyster Cult, Pat Travers, Joe Lynn Turner (of Rainbow), Rick Derringer, Rick Wakeman (Yes), Steve Morse (Deep Purple) and Keith Emerson (ELP). In 2009 White created "Orchestral Zeppelin" and toured around Canada performing with volunteer orchestras in each city.

After many years of anticipation, Bob Weir has finally announced the release of his first solo album in over 10 years. The album with “cowboy songs” is called Blue Mountain, and is due out on September 30th, according to Weir’s website. Not only that, but he’ll be supporting the new album with a tour, performing dates on both sides of the country from October 7th through the 19th.
Weir has been talking about the new album for years, and it features a lively cast of musicians. Josh Ritter, Josh Kaufman, Scott Devendorf, Aaron Dessner and Bryce Dessner are all known to have contributed to the new release, and Weir has mentioned bringing in lyricist John Perry Barlow to help with some of the album’s storytelling aspects. The concept should focus primarily on “cowboy” music, according to past interviews. You can pre-order the album here.
According to Rolling Stone, the full list of contributing musicians includes: Ray Rizzo (drums, harmonium, harmonica, backup vocals), Joe Russo (drums), Jon Shaw (upright bass, piano), Rob Burger (keyboard, accordion, tuned percussion), Sam Cohen (electric guitar and pedal steel), Nate Martinez (guitars, harmonium, backup vocals), Jay Lane (drums, vocals), Robin Sylvester (upright bass, vocals, hammond organ) and Steve Kimock (lapsteel). The Bandana Splits – comprising Annie Nero, Lauren Balthrop and Dawn Landes – sing backup on the album.
The tour dates supporting the release kick off on October 7th, where Weir will perform at the Marin County Civic Center in San Rafael, CA, After three days in California, Weir will fly across the country and stop in Upper Darby, PA, Brooklyn, NY, Port Chester, NY, and Nashville, TN. He’ll end the run with one final performance at the famed Ryman Auditorium. Weir will be performing with members of The National on tour, including Aaron Dessner, Bryan Devendorf, Scott Devendorf, and Josh Kaufman!
While this means a Dead & Company fall tour is unlikely, it’s encouraging to see Weir working hard at some of his own music. You can see the full tour schedule and Blue Mountain tracklisting below!

Darrell Nulisch - One Night In Boston

 5. Humbuggin Me - 3:54

11. I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down - 5:46
12. Dead Love - 4:02
13. What Have I Done Wrong - 7:11

For thirty five years Darrell Nulisch has been one of the premier blues vocalists on the scene. His first national exposure came by way of his work with North Texas native Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets. Their 1981 album on Black Top Records entitled, Talk to You By Hand was the band’s debut album and the first for that New Orleans based label. That recording was followed up by She Knocks Me Out, further cementing in the minds of blues fans Nulisch’s terrific vocal chops.
Since then Nulisch has sung on albums by Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters, Hubert Sumlin, Hash Brown’s Texas Blues Revue, Otis Grand and others. Last year alone he appeared on two great recordings; one by German guitarist Kai Straus, the other by The Knickerbockers All-Stars.
Nulisch may be best known for his near twenty year association as the principal vocalist with the James Cotton Band. All the while, Nulisch released a steady stream of first rate solo albums. One Night In Boston is his eighth release and the first live album in his prolific career.
For this outing Nulisch rounded up a band of veteran players from the north east blues music Mecca, New England. They are drummer Mark Texiara from the Duke Robillard Band fame and bassist Marty Ballou who has played with...well everybody. Monster Mike Welch of Sugar Ray and the Bluetones renown handles the guitar duties. Welch continues to emerge, as this album demonstrates, as a versatile talent of the highest order.
The real revelation on this album is the Hammond B3 work of Dave Limina. Limina in recent years can be heard on Ronnie Earl’s albums. It is this jazz organ trio sound that sets the tone and mood for One Night In Boston right out of the shoot. The album’s opening track is an instrumental listed in the CD’s liner notes as simply Warm Up. It is, in fact, a Jimmy Smith number entitled Blues for J. from his early 60’s Verve years which featured guitarist Kenny Burrell.  Here Limina and Welch, along with the rhythm section, play in the spirit of those jazz greats. The band flexes their own prodigious chops in that wonderful arena where jazz and blues take a ride on the same swing. By the time the band is done with this tune, which clocks in at just over seven minutes, they are not only warmed up, but played with enough fire to melt all the snow in Massachusetts.
The star of the show then takes to that scorching hot stage for a burning Texas shuffle, via the tune Love at First Site. Welch now turns from some impressive jazz chops to the rhythmic guitar territory that has had dancers doing the “push” in Dallas dance halls and nightclubs for generations.
From there Nulisch goes into Morning Train and visits that soul-blues territory that he has drifted towards over his past several outings. Where others often sound awkward in this blues sub genre, Nulisch, whose voice might put you in mind of Johnny Adams, seems right at home in this setting.
Next we are taken into the Excello swamp with Hum Buggin’ Me. Nulisch is a fine harp player and has the good taste not to play that instrument on every tune. In fact this is the only appearance of the harmonica on One Night In Boston.
The tune After All is a slow blues ballad with a wonderful jazzy feel via the great B3 playing by Limina and a brief, restrained solo by Welch.
The album continues to mine these rich veins of blues gold. This live album has a great sound and features simply stellar accompaniment to go along with the great vocal chops of Darrell Nulisch. This is a very solid, self released, twelve track outing by musicians at the top of their game.
One Night in Boston was recorded back in September of last year in what the rather minimalistic liner notes describes only as “…a small club on an even smaller bandstand.” I would go hear Nulisch and this band play anywhere, anytime, day or night, on any bandstand.  I hope they get out this year on the festival circuit and bring this great music to folks outside of Bean Town. In the meantime, pour yourself a glass of your favorite beverage, kick back and enjoy Darrell Nulisch’s One Night in Boston in your own hometown.?

Chicago is filled with a lot of talented & unique artists, many that go most of their career unnoticed. Tonight, I am beyond honored to share with you one of them. A woman who has fought her way to success, and in the midst of the crazy industry, has remained true and humble to herself, and her city of Chicago. Allow me to introduce to you, , Miss Sashé Taylor, a soulful, determined and mega talented young artist.
“I know bio’s can be long so I will keep this short. I started in the industry at the age of 10 years old. My uncle and a man named Jim Tullio gave me that start. Jim wrote songs for me, and due to my unique vibe and sound, Ron Alexenburg was interested in signing me over, as well as Lou Pearlmen for management. In a blink of an eye I knew my life could change, but it faded quickly. I ended up finishing grade school and high school, heavily training in dancing and singing. I never knew what happened to all that excitement until I found out later that my parents said ‘no’ to the fast life and said ‘yes’ to a normal life. I then went to college and flew back and fourth to Detroit getting into studios; writing, recording, and growing. After college, I stopped my Detroit gypsy life, and came back to Chicago in search of a new producer and a new start in this industry all over again. I started recording with “Oh Hush” from Atlantic and Warner Chapel. We did a collaboration and wrote the EP ‘Dare you To Love Me.’ From there I have sang at some of the top nightclubs in Chicago, local bars, headlined the McDonald’s Thanksgiving Parade, did a 15 city 2 month tour in China, and just recently did a music video. Now I am back at it again, working on my first full record with the man who gave me my start, Jim Tullio. Life works in mysterious ways & throughout this journey much has happened to make me the individual I am today. I have tried to get involved as much as I can in film, acting, and dancing as well. Which can even more explain the skills I want to master with my craft. It’s a crazy ride of good and bad, many disappointments, and living a life of a lot of unknown. I have worn many hats in both my career path, and my personal self. I knew when I was young that I couldn’t settle for the same life I knew everyone else was going to live, I wanted to impact the world and be a voice in a positive way. It’s a choice to live this sort of lifestyle, a few different jobs on top of your passion, but its worth it when you get there… so one day… I hope to get there.”-Sashé Taylor

In Better Luck Next Time gaat de rock ’n roll los. Hier ook weer met prikkelend en voortreffelijk gearrangeerd blaaswerk. Life In The Fast Lane kennen we van The Eagles, geschreven door Joe Walsh.

I've been watching blues and rock bands since the early 70's--the great ones, the commercial ones, and the forgettable ones. It takes a lot these days to impress my jaded ass and actually write something meaningful about one of them. Lucky for us, the resurgence in roots music has spawned some great talent of late. One of the very best is a band called the Ten Foot Polecats.
The Ten Foot Polecats have impressed the shit out of me ever since we heard this intense sound coming out of a remote street festival in New Hampshire some years ago. Among the folkies and wandering minstrels, we heard this driving beat getting louder and louder. I surmised it must be some well-seasoned band from the Delta region really whippin' it out. This was gonna be good!
Sounds can be deceiving! It was three local Boston guys, but it really felt like you just stepped into some old-timey juke joint way down south! One guy was caterwauling n' blowin’ harp, another beatin' the drums like his life depended on it, and another sitting on a beer cooler playing a beat up semi-hollow-body with five strings! By the end of the set, that five string black beauty had only one string left and it still sounded great!
Through all the psychedelic rock, Chicago blues, arena rock, prog rock, punk, hardcore, and metal music that transgressed through the years, there's been a void lately, and this band was bringing the mojo back. The Ten Foot Polecats are just what the doctor ordered!!
The trio has put out two excellent recordings prior to Undertow. The Ten Foot Polecats have taken their main inspiration from early Mississippi Hill Country blues, known best for its fast and trance-like rhythms. Paying homage to the likes of Robert Lee Burnside, Tommy Johnson, Fred McDowell and T-Model Ford among others, the boys have put their own fresh spin on a tried and true art form.
Undertow shows the full maturing of those influences and produces their first recording with all original tunes. Jay Scheffler, vocalist and harpist, does most of the writing. Diverse and always dynamic, his songs range from the dark and rootsy “Out in the Rain” to the beautiful and rhythmic “Lost At Sea”, and energy blasts like “Prescription” and “Do that Thang”--a real showcase for guitarist Jim Chilson's amazing finger picking. Jim's writing and playing often head into a powerful mix of Mississippi Hill and Eastern flavors adding all the more to the dark trance vibe the band do so well. Jim's “Someday(Your Pain Is Gonna End)” and “Undertow” work that sound to its fullest, with just enough over amplification and distortion any guitar freak would love. Chad Rousseau co-wrote “Undertow”, “Worried Sick”, and “Leave Well Enough Alone”. He fits perfectly with Jim Chilson (guitar) and Jay Scheffler (vocals and harp), always keeping this a guitar-centered band.
Whether it's Jim's astronomical guitar playing, Jay's Howl'n Wolf vocals, or Chad's mathematically precise drumming, these are musicians that take their music and history of it very seriously while never taking themselves too seriously. Jim Chilson's guitar playing cannot be underestimated. He has a natural talent that needs to be seen live to be believed. Of their three recordings, this is their best for showcasing Jim's playing. Undertow also does that remarkable thing only real blues seem to do... be both pained and dark, then be righteous and joyful without missing a beat. No matter what your mood, Undertow seems to have a place that feels just right.
The music scene of late has been tipping back and forth with a few glimmers of brilliance. There's not much middle room anymore like the "old days". I'm glad to see these guys getting an appreciative national audience and I have no doubt there are overseas gigs coming soon also.
From what I've seen and heard, there is no other band with quite the sound the Polecat's have mastered. While the recording Undertow is a golden nugget, the live show is the whole damn gold mine...see what I mean...I'll see you there!

 3. Walkin' - 4:12
 4. Fire - 3:50
 5. Annalena - 4:31

 9. Dreamin' - 3:09
10. Jammin' - 2:33

Toronto-based singer-guitarist Blersh is like the ideal fifth starter on a pitching staff.  He goes about his work with confidence and efficiency, not concerned about his lack of recognition south of Ontario.  Not beholden to a particular blues style, this veteran writes good bluesy songs that even reference antecedents like '70s white-soul and toned-down, dreamy Jeff Beck and Jimi Hendrix.  "I Don't Need No" is an outstanding merger of personal expression and lyricism with expert craftmanship.  His reliable sidekicks include organist Garth Hudson of The Band."  Frank-John Hadley, DOWNBEAT July 2010
“I was on a three week stint in northern Ontario.  Late one night after the gig we were listening to a radio station out of Minnesota somewhere that was playing all this great old 50’s rock & roll, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Elvis.  It hit me that Elvis needed a killer comeback back song, so I stayed up all that night and wrote him one.  As the sun was coming up I crawled into bed and fell asleep.  When I woke up, Elvis was dead.  I never played the song again until this year, “Tryin”, it’s the first tune on my record”.
Terry Blersh, veteran guitarist and singer-songwriter has just released his self-titled debut CD.  If you’re a fan of Canadian blues and roots music, you’ve probably seen him, doing his own thing or backing up many of your favourite artists, on stage and in the studio.
The record features nine of Terry’s original tunes and one blazing cover, Jimi Hendrix’s “Fire”.  Blues, rhythm & blues, rock ‘n roll and jazz influences are all evident, with Terry’s smooth vocals, fiery guitar and clever writing, tying it all together.  There’s some rock ‘n roll (Tryin’), some blues (Wearin’ Out My Heart, Walkin’), rhythm & blues and soul (Doin’ All Right, I Don’t Need No), southern rock (Annalena) as well as three instrumentals (Flyin’, Dreamin’, Jammin’).
The band Terry assembled for the record includes some of Canada’s finest musicians. Denis Keldie (Serena Ryder, Carlos Del Junco) on piano and organ, Al Cross (Jimmy Bowskill, Jerome  Godboo) on drums, Tom Griffiths (Colin Linden, Willie P. Bennett)  on bass and John Mays (Fathead) on background vocals.  Also heard on the record, Garth Hudson (organ) Mike Sloski (drums), Charlie Cooley (drums), Garth Vogan (bass), Alec Fraser  (bass), Lance Anderson (piano).  Recording and mixing by ace     engineer Jeremy Darby (Lou Reed, Eric Clapton) at The Canterbury Music/

10. More Than Just to Win - 4:30
11. Visitation - 5:46

Airbridge was an early 1980s metal band featuring Lorenzo Bedini (guitar, keyboard, vocals), Edward Percival (guitar, keyboard, vocals), Sean Godfrey (bass, vocals) and David Beckett (drums). Their album Paradise Moves was released in 1982.
Later augmented by Stephen J Bennett (keyboards), the expanded line-up released the single "Words & Pictures" single, which was chosen on Desert Island Discs by the author Malcolm Bradbury. In late 1983 Bedini and Bennett were replaced by Geoff Chamberlain (guitars), and the group recorded a second (unreleased) album, Beyond the Veil, before breaking up at the end of 1983.
The band toured many of the same venues as groups such as Marillion and Pallas, including several gigs at the Marquee. There is a strong Barclay James Harvest influence in the style of Bedini's songs, but Percival composed later material which was more mainstream progressive with some pop influence. After the breakup, Bennett and Godfrey formed LaHost, which included Fudge Smith, later of Pendragon; Beckett later joined as well.
Whilst regarded by some as a Progressive Rock Band they are widely recognised as part of the NWoBHM era. In the team's opinion "keys don't make a Progressive Rock Band"/

Musicians:
Dave Shouse - vocals, guitar, piano, keyboard, songwriter
Joan Wasser - violin, vocals
Matt Fields - bass, piano, vocals
Michael Tighe - guitars
Kevin March - drums, percussion

Those Bastard Souls' first release was essentially a solo project for David Shouse. For their second offering, Shouse has assembled a crack band including members of several well-known alternative acts including Michael Tighe (Jeff Buckley) on guitar, Matt Fields (Red Red Meat) on bass, and a pair of ex-Dambuilders, Kevin March and Joan Wasser, on drums and violin, respectively. Most of the songs detail crumbling relationships, like the simmering, slow-burn of "The Last Thing That I Ever Wanted Was to Show Up and Blow Your Mind" and the pretty, wistful "The Wake of Your Flood." There's also some fantastic straight-ahead rock like the buoyant garage-pop of "Train from Terminal Boredom" and the chugging, uptempo "Has Anybody Seen Her," complete with handclaps. Debt & Departure is an album whose whole is definitely equal to the sum of its impressive parts.

This is the late West-Coast native Tom McFarland’s first album (plus three bonus tracks) for the first time on CD. Subject matter ranges from personal relationships to prostitutes from blues musician’s wages to the price of gasoline. Some humorous some serious all composed and performed by this remarkably tasteful and subtle blues singer guitarist and composer.  “Backed only by bass and drums McFarland’s clean guitar lines and no-nonsense vocals ring true to such mentors as B B King Freddie King and Otis Rush while his original songs present an artist quite worthy of standing in his own spotlight. McFarland died in September 2004 aged 59 so this reissue of his first major (1978) album (plus 3 extra tracks) provides a timely tribute to a fine musician who never achieved wide fame.”
