10. My Baby's Gone - 5:37
11. I'm Gonna Give it up - 4:25
12. When The Blues Hit You - 4:24

Classic example of a Chicago blues ensemble. Driven powerfully by both harmonica and guitar.
"Serving up 12 Davenport original tunes on the album, 'Mad Dog' and his mates have cooked up a spicy stew of vintage blues sounds. Tracks like the hopping 'It Won't Work Like That, I'm Gonna Move' and the rousing 'I'm Gonna Give It Up' find Davenport ... singing convincingly in a gruff time seasoned tone, and blowing up a storm on the harp." -Chicago Blues Magazine
"The 'Mad Dog' is such a powerful soloist in the Little Walter vein (the Big Walter vein, too, before that worthy turned so introspective) that you wish he'd just keep on goin ... The model here is pretty clearly the Muddy Waters ensemble ... That's OK with me - the Morganfield model is a durable one and Lester even sings a bit like the Master ... As for backup, we've got John Primer, guitarist in Muddy's band and a student of Sammy Lawhorn ... Add Sunnyland Slim, his accomplices Stroger and Covington, and the right amount of chugging and scratching from Willow Davis, and you've got a band that ought to tour ... Excellent recording. Got for it." - Cadence

Every once in a great while there’s a blues band that reminds you why you love the blues. This band fronted by a spectacularly original lead singer is why these reminders are so far and few between. It’s ultimately the truth and depth of feeling dispensed on this disc that drives these extraordinary North East Londoners down their own boogie blues highway not necessarily all the way to hell but definitely one of the stops. North London blues veteran Howlin’ George Winter, born in Jamaica but came to London in the mid-sixties. His singing goes from growl to howl, from high to low, whatever the song demands, he delivers. He goes for it all without a net or filter and Steve Crane, electric guitar/musical soul mate, is always there to catch him with slick leads that come in just as many shades, moods and tones. The backup band is top shelf with Mick Whitehead on Bass and a nice “Shanty” style harp on the last tune, and John Baker on drums who is also name credited as producer of this fine sounding set of rocking blues recorded at Woodshed Studios, London. The songs, all originals, are credited to all band members who also share producer credit as a band with John. This is an all for one and one for all blues band of merry men.
The CD kicks off with the triple purpose band name; album name; and upbeat swinging title track letting the audience know the name is true and that they are about to have a great time. On track 2 it jumps right into the deep end of the pool of despair on part one of a conceptual song duo Never Say Never. The conclusion of which is Never Say Never Again on track 8. Howlin’ George lets us in on his personal troubles with a continental lady he chases over the two tunes only to find out in the end he’s not her number one. This is probably not a reference to the Romeo Void masterpiece punk dance floor filler but it does let non-believers in on a dirty little secret that punk sensibility is a part of the blues palette with this hard rocking outfit.
Track 3 “Cash Converter Blues” is a nod to mod and is the track most likely to break over the airwaves. But what follows is just as tasty. “Sugar Sweet” is a lament that wraps around your heart and doesn’t let go for both the long time lovers and the lovelorn. The next “Rhumba Woman” gets the Latin blues beat a nice run around the track as do all the tracks throughout the CD.  There is not one single miss on this disc and by the end of the program we’re back down to that old familiar place in hell with “My Liver Don’t love Me no More” and an acoustic finale about the mantra of letting things go.
The messages here are clearly delivered with humor and humanity and more than enough great music going on around it to compel many repeat listens.  This is a band to watch. They are the real blues thing that so often is missing from the mailing-it-in types endlessly touring until all the originality has been spent delivering the tired but true message. They could be much bigger given the quality of devotion to the art of getting the feeling just right for each tune. Variety is the spice and there is much to discover here.
Radio programmers should jump on this quick and let the people in on what is going on across the pond once again.

A winning combination of blues, rock and R&B, performed by one of Nashville's legendary blue eyed (well actually, green-eyed) soul singers/
Vickie Carrico was born in Louisville Kentucky. After believing for her entire childhood that she would become a nun, Vickie started doing gigs in bars at the age of 14 and has never stopped…
Since moving to Nashville some years ago, Carrico has been working not only as a solo artist, but also as a studio singer and as a background vocalist for any number of different acts. Shes lent her voice to albums by a diverse group of artists, from ZZ Top and Don McLean to Lee Greenwood and Patty Loveless. Carrico has also toured the world as a background singer with a number of artists including Dottie West, Sam Moore and Brenda Lee in addition to touring with her own material. Carrico has appeared in music videos with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Steve Wariner and Hoyt Axton, and has performed on television shows including Solid Gold, American Magazine, as well as HBO Specials and Public Television's "Rock and Roll Graffiti. Shes sung on jingles for, among others, Ford Trucks and the Los Angeles Lakers.
“Never Been Hurt” is Carrico’s first full length CD; she wrote about half of the material for the project, while the rest was chosen from among her favorite classic blues and R&B songs. In addition to Carrico, who sang lead and background vocals, the musicians who played on “Never Been Hurt” include Carolyn Martin, Etta Britt and Craig Morris (background vocals), Dave Martin (bass and percussion) and Tommy Wells and John Gardner sharing the drum duties. Don Carr and Jack Pearson played guitars, and Bob Patin, Catherine Styron-Marx, Murph Wanka and Rodger Morris played piano, organ and Electric pianos. Jim Hoke played harmonica and saxes, and led the horn section, a group that also included Steve Herrman and Billy Huber (playing trumpet and trombone, respectively).
Vickie Carrico lives in Nashville with her husband, Bob Reeves, and two cats named Bela and Boris.

AVID Roots continues with its Four Classic Blues album series with a re-mastered 2 CD release by John Lee Hooker complete with original artwork and liner notes. The story of John Lee Hooker is another classic blues story but with a twist, this one has a happy ending! Born into a poor sharecropping family with eleven children near Clarkesdale, Mississippi, by 1921 John Lee was saying hello to his new step father, a blues musician called William Moore. John Lee sites Moore as the man who set him on the road of the blues man. By 14 he had run away from home, allegedly never to see his mother or step father again.
By the 1940’s Hooker had become part of the black migration from the south to the industrial towns of the north. However, whereas the likes of Muddy and Wolf went to Chicago, Hooker landed in Detroit where he found work in the Ford Motor Company all the while checking out and playing in the local clubs around town. It was here that he decided to buy his first electric guitar, in order to be heard, he had discovered, you needed to play LOUD!
His recording career began in 1948 when he recorded his first major hit and most famous song "Boogie Chillun" which trade marked his classic sound, the boogie shuffle. John Lee Hooker falls into that rare category of blues men that includes B.B. King and not many others, who became more popular and successful the older they became. He enjoyed the 1960’s blues revival along with many of the early rural blues greats but was able to sustain that success through the following years and indeed enjoyed his greatest success during the 1980’s and 90’s and was preparing to tour Europe when he died at age 83 in 2001.

The Breakfast - Live at Gathering of the Vibes

 4. Echidna's Are (of You) -  3:59
 5. Gravity -  9:59
 6. Buquebus - 14:04

The band was formed in 1998 in East Haven, Connecticut with the original lineup consisting of guitarist Tim Palmieri, bassist Ron Spears, drummer Adrian Tramontano, and keyboardist Jordan Giangreco. They decided on their first name, Psychedelic Breakfast, based on the suggestion of Tramontano's cousin. It is a reference to the Pink Floyd song "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast," from their album Atom Heart Mother. The original idea of the band's name was a play off of that song, "Adrian's Psychedelic Breakfast," after Tramontano; it was later shortened to just Psychedelic Breakfast.
The band began cutting its teeth by playing shows at a variety of local bars in the New Haven, Connecticut area during the early goings of 1999. That summer, they released their first album, Psychedelic Breakfast. Four songs from the album were featured on the MTV series, Undressed. As 1999 wore on and the world turned the page to the new millennium, Psychedelic Breakfast began to progressively start spreading throughout the Northeast. In 2004, Psychedelic Breakfast won a Jammy Award for being the "New Groove of the Year."Shortly thereafter, the band decided to change its name to 'The Breakfast.' Around this time, Relix Magazine published an article about The Breakfast. On June 17, 2006, The Breakfast performed its 1,000th show at Toad's Place in New Haven, Connecticut. Then on July 7, Giangreco played the final show of his first stint with the band at Beardslee Castle in Little Falls, New York. Palmieri, Spears, and Tramontano performed as a trio at Corner Pocket in Orange, Connecticut on July 8 and then forged ahead with that lineup, with Palmieri playing both keyboard and guitar.

12. They're Red Hot - 3:11

Many musicians go the solo route. Some take their place in a band. But for some, it’s when they find the right musical partner that their career really blossoms. Such is the case of the January Berry Band, based around the guitar work of John January and the vocals of Linda Berry. Though considered a blues band, their music can cover a lot of ground, taking in elements of funk, classic rock, and more, for a sound that’s built to keep a dance floor packed.
Both January and Berry have had thriving music careers, but it’s when they teamed up, both as musicians and romantic partners in 2015 that they started to truly reach the public’s attention. Their album, Chemistry 101 was nominated for a 2018 San Diego Music Award, with a new collection in the works and a slew of club dates ahead with their band, which includes Mel Hintz on drums, Brian Bannock on bass, and Doug White on keyboards.
“Yes, we are called a blues act,” Berry said. “But I think we are much more than that. It’s hard to categorize us. The blues is our first love, though. All of our music is filled with soul and most of it is “blues-based.” Like many blues artists, we do a lot of covers, but we like to pick lesser-known songs and put our own patina on them. The songs we pick or write reflect the diverse musical styles that influenced us growing up.’

The Mother Hips - Shootout

 1. Can't Sleep at All - 4:01
 2. Mother Hips - 3:25
 3. Honeydew - 4:09
 4. Collected Some Nerve - 3:13
 5. Single Spoon - 3:11

11. Whiskey on a Southbound - 2:42
12. Picture of Him - 3:50
13. Emergency Exit - 4:58
14. Superwinners - 3:35

Shootout begins with the spirited riff of "Can't Sleep At All," one of Mother Hips' best songs. By the time the last (hidden) track pounds to a close, a lot of fine music has gone by, but in the end, something doesn't quite latch. It's not that Mother Hips aren't good musicians, but vague songwriting and boggy production neutralize much of their energy. Tim Bluhm's voice is smothered, warping his otherwise playful lyrics into detached, formulaic murmurs. If his personality ever fully emerges, chances are Mother Hips will turn out some darn good records/

Ze openen met twee Wille and the Bandits klassiekers, Keep Your Head Up en Trouble Down The Line.
Eldon Backhouse and The Electric Blues Band - Catslide Roof

Size: 92,1 MB
Label: Self Released
Styles: Blues/Blues Rock

 4. What a Shame - 3:51

 8. Another Man - 2:30
 9. Back In Your Town - 6:23

Now, here’s an extraordinary tale, a yarn as unlikely as a condom in a convent and yet a second coming of sorts that will warm your soul. A few years after the end of the Second World War, a certain Eldon Backhouse was delivered into this world – the bastard son of a US Air Force grunt (Kent Backhouse) who had been stationed in Suffolk (and stuck around) and a flirtatious young English lass of considerable easy virtue. Seeking to escape the stifling, behind-net-curtains judgement of family and neighbors in conservative, iron-gray post-war Britain, the couple eloped with young Eldon and took passage to Backhouse’s town of origin – Helena, Arkansas.
Although details are very scant, their romantic new life together was short-lived. Old Kent began drinking for America, and a lonely, homesick Mum took solace and sought company in the juke-joints littered around town. Young Eldon got used to making his own way at the tender age of ten, often sneaking into the joints on the premise of looking for his mother….however, they never left together. As his mother soothed her lonely heart with the nearest interested male, young Eldon watched guitarist after guitarist at Club 25, eventually stealing a beaten up acoustic from the closet which doubled as a dressing room. That battered old six string became his escape from a torrid childhood and he learned the shit out of it. He soon formed his Electric Blues Band and featured frequently, if briefly, on the local scene.
At some point, believed to be in the late ‘60s, Eldon apparently experienced a “crossroads-type epiphany” of sorts and left the area to go to school studying law. He had sold his soul to the devil, crossed over to the dark side and practiced small town law – essentially disappearing into musical obscurity.
Perhaps in recognition of his own mortality or some other quirky twist of fate, Eldon Backhouse recently reappeared in the UK tracing his roots and met up with famed harmonica player, Alan Glen (The Yardbirds, 9 Below Zero, BB King). One thing led to another and together with Glen on harp, Backhouse has just recorded his first album entitled Catslide Roof.
Consisting largely of interpretations of classic blues covers, the album also features three original compositions and is heavy on shuffling, chugging, slide-soaked beauties.
Opening with “Baby Please Don’t Go”, Backhouse growls his way through a gloriously urgent, amphetamine-infused rendition. Things get a little dirtier on original track, “Corrugated Iron”, featuring weaving organ, slide and harp interplay to great effect and lamenting the demise of the long lost shacks where Eldon initially plied his trade.
Mose Alison’s “Parchman Farm” gets similar, respectful treatment and mixes up the pace of the album nicely. Ever-faithful to the evolution of the blues, Backhouse and his band pay tribute to his dual US/UK ancestry, including a freshened up version of Jagger/Richards’ “What A Shame” and a jangly, meaty cover of “Back In Your Town”, one of the Chequered-Shirted Wizard’s best tracks – Lord Rory of Gallagher would have raised a glass in justified salute to this one.
There’s almost a ZZ Top-type bump-and-grind on Backhouse’s excellent cover of Canned Heat’s “On The Road Again”, a groin-tingling, sweaty, driving blues which almost strains to be contained, such is the energy of the track. If you don’t “feel” this one, you’re dead from the waist down.
“Ramblers Shack” re-visits the theme of Backhouse’s troubled younger days, his sister teaching young Eldon to jive (although I suspect this is more of a reference to his “fun-loving” mother), a lilting, Celtic mandolin backdrop – a reminder perhaps of the link between early blues and country genres. Lush and melodic.
“Shrewd Move”, the third original Backhouse compilation, features some stellar, front-and-central guitar work and classy harp-blowing. Lyrically, Backhouse seems to recall his divorce lawyer days and has captured that “good man, feeling bad” vibe so prevalent in the blues. “Another Man” is a blistering interpretation of the traditional arrangement chain-gang song attesting to the brutality of the penal system.
An enigmatic story indeed and a very solid, tight album – the (lawyer’s) pen may be mightier than the sword but Eldon Backhouse and The Electric Blues Band prove that six strings, a bottleneck and Alan Glen blowing on his lickin’ stick conquer all. When it rains soup and all you have is a fork, them’s the blues and Backhouse might well be the cure.

The Mighty Lester Band is celebrating their fifth year together of performing and touring and has released this, their second CD titled “We Are Mighty Lester”. This band is getting a lot of great reviews for their live shows and also getting a lot of airplay on XM Satellite Radio (currently #5)! I give this disc 3.4 out of 5 on the STLBluesometer rating. Go check them out at the upcoming International Blues Challenge or visit them online at MightyLesterBand.com
Featuring the captivating Todd Dewberry on vocals, the powerful Mighty Horns, and a rock-solid rhythm section, Raleigh, North Carolina-based Mighty Lester has the crowd on their feet within seconds of hitting the stage. Drawing on influences from Kansas City, West Coast and Chicago Blues to Memphis Stax Soul, Mighty Lester keeps your hands clappin’, your toes tappin’, and your butt shakin’ all night long. Formed in 2000 as a trio, they quickly expanded to a seven-piece with harmonica and two saxes.
After their first club gig, the core of the band decided to kick it up a notch. They let the saxes, harp and keys go and brought in a full horn section, new keys man and dropped the harp altogether. Hitting the stage in September 2001 for their first live gig with the new lineup they were crowned the champions of the Triangle Blues Society 2001 Blues Competition and made the semi-final round in the 2002 International Blues Challenge. Having spent a few years perfecting their craft and finding just the right mix of people, they were proud to be crowned the champs at the 2005 Piedmont Blues Preservation Society Blues Challenge.
They had a phemoninal showing in Memphis for the 2006 International Blues Challenge with numerour radio requests, gigs and tour offers and even a sit down with a major label executive. More recently, Mighty Lester had the 'Blues Track of the Day' five times and the 'Blues Track of the Week' two times on Garageband.Com. They also were featured as the opening track on a recent episode of the Roadhouse Podcast. A powerhouse band that delivers a real-deal set of jump, swing and Stax-flavored soul all in one CD. Recorded live-in-studio, the music has all the energy and punch of a live gig-not easy to do with an eight-piece band. Solid rhythm, big horns and soulful vocals from beginning to end. Winner of IBC 'Best Self-Produced CD' and 3rd place in the indie band competition.

Roharpo - Livin' the Dream

Bitrate: 320K/s
Year: 2016
Time: 41:45
Size: 95,9 MB
Label: Self REleased
Styles: Blues
Art: Front

Tracks Listing:
 1. Treat Me So Mean - 3:45
 2. In Love - 3:53
 3. Give Me Your Hand - 3:53
 4. Shake What You Got - 4:10
 5. I Can't Trust You - 3:53
 6. Let it be What it be - 5:58
 7. Tears in Your Eyes - 8:46
 8. What is it You Like About Me - 3:47
 9. Don't Put Me In a Spot - 3:36

Unfortunately this CD reached Blues Blast with no information other than the single sheet cover which gives the song titles but nothing else. It is not therefore possible to credit any musicians other than RoHarpo who it is safe to assume handles vocals and harp; drums, bass and keys are also present. There is also no indication of a release date though his website reveals that a CD release party was held on 27 February 2016! The website also states that Ro was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana but is now based in Sacramento, California.
The overall style here is blues with a dash of funk, Ro playing plenty of harp throughout. There are no writing credits but several songs are re-workings of familiar tunes such as “Treat Me So Mean” (with a spoken section that recalls Barry White) and “Give Me Back My Weave” which is Hound Dog Taylor’s tune with one word changed. Opener “In Love” is more of a funky tune with some nice guitar accents and “Give Me Your Hand” is a fast shuffle. “Shake What You Got” is a strange track with a lower sonic quality, Ro’s vocals sounding rather distant and an annoying synth riff coming from the far right of your headphones. Things improve with “I Can’t Trust You” as Ro plays some gentle harp on a slower song in which Ro’s relationship seems to be falling apart.
Two longer tunes follow: “Let It Be What It Be” has another spoken vocal, this time recalling Isaac Hayes, and some horns in the background; “Tears In Your Eyes” appears to be a live recording (with a noticeable drop in sound clarity – the recording also picks up someone answering a cell phone in the background!), a slow soul-blues ballad which Ro delivers well though at over eight minutes it does outstay its welcome. We return to studio recordings for “What Is It You Like About Me”, a shuffle with good harp work, and “Don’t Put Me In A Spot”, a stripped-back fast tune with Ro’s harp backed by just guitar and tambourine.
Overall nothing special to discuss here but plenty of harp to enjoy. It is a pity that there was not more information to pass on to readers to help to explain the background to the disc.

10. My Pockets Filled with Blues - 5:54

Geir Pettersen, trommer

Østfolds tøffeste og tighteste blåsegruppe:
Jon Petter Gonzalez Lindberg, trompet
Frode Engan, sax ( baryton og tenor )
Andreas Stene Pettersen, trombone

Howard McCullum brings Chicago blues to a worldwide audience. He and the members of his band first met in college at Northern Illinois University in Dekalb back in 1988. They've been living the Chicago blues ever since, making the Windy City their home and serving as ambassadors for their contemporary sound.
While the band's fusion of funk, R&B, and rock with contemporary blues strays pretty far from the pioneering colors of Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon, they've got the same emotional outpouring and fiery guitar action that has always characterized Chicago blues.
Several selections, such as "Walking to My Baby, come clearly from the blues mainstream. Guitars and keyboards replace harmonica in their lineup, filling the role successfully. McCullum sings convincingly about hot relationships, failed romance, havin' a good time, dedicated love, lonely nights, growing apart, and sad, sad hearts.
Cold Cold Feeling recalls the session's truest and most traditional meaning of the blues, as Howard and the White Boys soak up a mournful aura in a fit of passion. Everyone can relate to their message. With McCullum's poignant vocals and his band's fiery guitar attack, this one hits home.
Black Cat Bone brings back the funk and the dance that we're gonna miss, now that James Brown has passed. McCullum gives this one a fierce texture that burns hot and bright.
Walk Away and "Coming Home both move slowly and sincerely with a country flavor, as Howard and the White Boys take their opportunity to share an original message through their music. The latter, an instrumental number, brings everyone together in a passionate mix of emotion that grows gradually hotter and hotter. Made in Chicago is a clear winner, proving to the world that good blues continues to pique our deepest feelings.

Rock 'n' Roll that tells a story...edgy, dark, progressive, classic. Sometimes sarcastic, sometimes cynical with a touch of humor, sometimes moody and serious. All the time entertaining.
This album actually has its roots dating back 30 plus years. I wrote these songs around high school age and though they have been performed in various bands, the music has finally been captured here. It’s interesting how these songs are just as much relevant today as they were when they were originally written. The album features the talents of Gregg Bissonette on drums and his brother Matt Bissonette on bass.Enjoy!

"If my brain is alive in 2005" Jason Russo sang at the start of The Curved Glass. Well, his brain is alive five years later, and on Birds of Appetite (inspired by Thomas Merton's Zen and the Birds of Appetite), Hopewell's neo-psychedelic rock is a spirited vehicle for Russo's tear-jerking narratives. Within a record about struggle ("and we're living in Calcutta/with one foot in the grave and the other in the gutter"), his subjects are faced with survival, death, and rising floods. He attempts to reassure them ("and if you wake up screaming, know that God is near"), giving the impression that he's witnessed their hardships first-hand. The moderately paced jams, landing somewhere between the Flaming Lips and early-'70s Pink Floyd, adds a pulse to the sadness. Enlivened with trumpet, Hammond organ, and cello, the songs are never quite as enveloping as contempories the Lips or Mercury Rev ("Synthetic Symphony" being a tremendous exception), though unlike those bands, Hopewell takes more time to develop their creations, holding out for something more expressive.

Louisiana Blues and Roots Music with a true southern flair. The is our 7th cd of original Louisiana Roots Music. It reflects our love of so many musical styles from blues to rock, zydeco to jazz and even country. This is truly one of my favorites because I finally have a cd that features my long time friend, harmonica virtuoso and ex Heavyweight band member, two times in fact, Jason Ricci on several tracks( Bayou Life, Millionaire Baby, Mother Trucker , Crazy About You Baby). Jason and I always wanted to have a recording together now it's here. I'm also a huge Muddy Waters fan and we are blessed to have legendary long time Muddy Waters guitarist , Bob Margolin on World Full of Trouble and Love So Fine. The Cd was recorded at Suite Mix Studios in funky Slidell, LA. It's our 2nd recording here. This is the studio that longtime Funky Meters guitarist, Brian Stoltz has used for so many years. There's a real good reason. George Cureau Jr is an excellent producer, engineer who just creates a super vibe that makes it all so easy. Can't say enough about Louisiana Music Hall of Fame member, long time Heavyweight and co writer on these tracks,Wayne Lohr who is an excellent keyboard player and immensely soulful vocalist. He contributed so much to this project. Also, Destin Thibodaux who was one Jason's students and was instrumental in making this happen. He's an excellent arranger, harmonica player and even plays bass on Crazy About You Baby. If you're a guitar fan, we have the great John Lisi who plays in Jason's band and super soulful vocalist guitarist Lance Younger. Lance is featured vocalist on World Full of Trouble, Testify, Bayou Life, Mother Trucker and Two Wrongs. All in all if you are a fan of roots music with a soulful southern flair. this is it !

 3. Sketches, VI-VII: Nothing to Lose/War Song - 10:37

 5. Sketches, IX: Forever Broken -  6:11
 6. Sketches, X: The Misfortune of Time -  8:07
 7. Sketches, XI-XII: But a Beast/I Will -  8:03

Formed in 2011 with Mathew SPIVACK (lead vocals, flute, guitar) and Chris CHILDNESS (bass, vocalist), the band had several line-up changes with Kody LITTLE (lead guitar, vocals) departure and Calvin MERSEAL (drums) joining the band in 2013. At that period, the band went into a productive writing period. Kody came back to solidify things even further. The band has to rely on many musicians to play the keyboards because they don't have a permanent keyboard player. They had a lot of songs to record (more than 3 hours). The first album "Time of Departure" was the first of a trilogy around the story of Alan Quill struggling artist in this modern society. They played at the Progtoberfest III in Chicago, the second album "As We Were" was just ready for that festival. The music of AMALGAM EFFECT shows some nice interplay between guitar and flute with a solid rhythm section. The influences of JETHRO TULL and RUSH can be heard but in the distinctive own style of the band.

Bill Stuve - Big Noise

Bitrate: 320K/s
Year: 1990

Label: Tramp
Styles: Contemporary Blues

Tracks Listing:
 1. Just Got Lucky - 2:52
 2. Big Noise - 3:19
 3. Centipede Crawl - 2:05
 4. Must Have Been the Devil - 3:52
 5. Sherry Twist - 2:32
 6. Big Money Blues - 5:28
 7. She Walked Right In/Honey Hush - 3:43
 8. Cuttin' In - 3:09
 9. Was it Something I Said - 1:52
10. Black Diamond - 2:41
11. I Got to Find my Baby - 3:33
12. Feel So Good - 3:21

The atmosphere is like joining the buddies for drinks and a good time at the Saturday night poker party. The stakes aren't high, but the winning bet is to see Stuve having fun with the guys, whether it be with pianist Steve F'dor and James Harman romping on the blame name game on Otis Spann's "Must Have Been the Devil" or saxist Lee Allen grooving to some rockabilly jump blues. Listen as Stuve shifts from jump blues to sock hop music in one fell swoop on "Centipede Crawl."
"Let's have some fun" -- that's pretty much what I try to do," says Bill Stuve, string bassist and sometimes vocalist with Los Angeles' Rod Piazza and The Mighty Flyers. That philosophy worked then, and it still works. It's serious music, but try to have some fun with it. Everybody gets his share of the spotlight - whether it's pianist Steve F'dor on "Big Money Blues," harmonicat James Harman on "Must Have Been The Devil," or baritone saxophonist Jeff Turmes. If the tenor sax solos, on "Just Got Lucky" and "She Walked Right In," sound familiar, they should. That's none other than Lee Allen, who blew with Little Richard, Fats Domino and countless others.

Assembly of Dust - The Honest Hour

Bitrate: 320K/s

 5. Paul Henry -  4:06

 8. Bus Driver -  4:16
 9. Fountain -  6:47

Reid Genauer is one of those songwriters that seem to have an endless amount of new and imaginative ideas for songs. Just when you start to forget about Genauer’s powerfully emotional singing and songwriting, due to a somewhat sporadic touring schedule, he always seems to emerge with a new batch of songs that radiate with originality and creativity. The former Strangefolk co-founder/lead singer and his band “The Assembly of Dust” are back with their sophomore effort, The Honest Hour. Following up their spectacular and finely crafted self-titled debut studio effort, The Honest Hour showcases the Assembly of Dust in the more familiar and looser live setting. Genauer’s knack for combining elements of rock, pop, folk and country are apparent from the get-go, as the album’s openers “Man With a Plan” and “Harrower” bring Genauer’s soulful voice and catchy story-like lyrics to the forefront. The infectiously catchy “Paul Henry” stands out as one of the album’s strongest points with an emotional story that weaves its way through a bouncy rhythm. “Honey Creeper” finds guitarist Adam Terrell’s growling wah sweeps paving the way on one of the album’s more energetic and funk-laden tunes. Along with seven new original songs penned for the Assembly of Dust, Reid revisits the Strangefolk classics “Roads” and “Speculator” with Percy Hill alumni Nate Wilson and John Leccese, on keys and bass respectivley, carving out their own niche in these familiar songs. While the A.O.D. certainly does these songs justice, newer live favorites such as “Stone Choir” or “Zero to the Skin” would’ve been a better fit on the album. Genauer offers up a taste of bouncy bluegrass with “Bus Driver,” a fast paced tune that can easily pose as an outtake from Strangefolk’s 2000 release Weightless in Water. While The Honest Hour is a fine sampling of Genauer’s latest batch of creativity, the album comes across as mix of new songs pulled from live recordings, rather than the one solid live performance it was originally recorded from. While the album features some very strong material, it is somewhat of a disappointment in comparison to their dazzling debut studio album.

Nate Wilson Group - Unbound

Bitrate: 320K/s
Year: 2008
Time: 51:29
Size: 118,3 MB
Label: Self Released
Styles: Rock/Jam Band
Art: Front

Tracks Listing:
 1. Hear the Echoes - 6:11
 2. See it Through - 4:53
 3. Scatterbrain - 3:30
 4. The Long Ships - 8:11
 5. For the Sun - 4:35
 6. Justify - 6:09
 7. Sticks and Stones - 5:37
 8. Patterns - 5:21
 9. Unbound - 6:59

What a goddamn fantastic piece of rock ‘n’ roll. The Nate Wilson Group come on with the fiery mojo of Free, Move-era Jeff Lynne, early solo David Gilmour (with a few Meddle touches) and more modern kindred spirits like power pop craftsmen Matthew Sweet and Stephen Malkmus – a heavy, melodic thrust & joust that’s just plain great listening. Wilson’s debut as a bandleader, Unbound, is largely a far cry from his work in Assembly of Dust (there are a few distant echoes on “Justify” & “Unbound”), a denser, harder sound with his strong, delicately edged voice riding an animated surge full of big guitars, big motifs and bold arrangements.Leadoff track “Hear The Echoes” jumps out with such balls dangling swagger that you’re swept off your feet before you know what hit you. If all you know of Wilson is his artful, amicable work in AOD this will rock you back on your heels – gorgeous analog keys, celestial harmonies, giant drums and serious guitar crunch. And the thick joys just keep on rolling, some airier (“The Long Ships”), some as stadium ready as ’70s Peter Frampton (“See It Through”) but all possessed of remarkable juice, grit and real style. This album should be what we call modern hard rock and tools like Nickelback should be playing the chicken wings bars they so richly deserve. The Nate Wilson Group – Wilson (keyboards, lead vocals), fellow AOD member Adam Terrell (guitar), Tommy Lada (bass) and Tom Arey (drums) – give The Raconteurs and Rose Hill Drive a major run for their money in terms of power, invention, funky sexiness and sheer melodic grace. At the risk of overselling it, you really need to hear Unbound if you hold any love for smart, beautifully constructed hard rock. From the Swan Song Records style cover down to their dirty jeans and dirtier riffs, the Nate Wilson Group know what long haired boys and lil’ baby girls need down deep in their rock souls – heaping handfuls of beauty, truth and gonad-vibrating pleasure. Put another way, perhaps THE finest bong hit opus in recent memory. ‘Nuff said.
