When Cobb's Corner nightclub owner Henry Normile was murdered, followed by the in-street shooting and death of Eddie Jefferson, the heart of the Detroit jazz scene was ripped apart. Through the advent of the Labor Day Montreux-Detroit Jazz Festivals starting in 1980, things picked back up measurably, but the club scene has never been the same. This live recording of the Lyman Woodard Organization, which was taped the day before Normile was killed in his next door apartment, more than any other album or event exemplified the never say die spirit of Motor City jazz. It also was a hallmark for a unique style of the music, an urban rhythm & blues infused contemporary jazz that stood tall for both listeners and dancers during the tail-end of the disco movement. Woodard was in his prime, determined that his idea was singular, and went beyond soul-jazz into a realm where only he could claim ownership. With guitarist Robert Lowe and saxophonist Allan Barnes, who would both go on to national acclaim as leaders, the Organization was a powerhouse in live performance not to be denied, and for sure a solid sending crowd pleaser. A much better recording than his studio cult classic Saturday Night Special, this live set laid the groundwork for the continuation of Woodard's career for decades to come, and showed his fellow Detroiter's that better days lay ahead. Where the title track is happy and a bit more commercial than the rest with its slinky, straight, fingerpopping, sublime beat and seductive vocal line, "Disco Tease" prances along in a hard rock vein with conga accents from Lorenzo Brown and chicken scratch, dramatic guitar chords from Lowe. "Down Lowe" is a concrete, fatback groove from the guitarist, while "Djarum" turns the wick down in a slow, sexy nightshade visage, with Kerry Campbell's soprano sax expanding the horn section with Woodard's organ in stretched out phrases. The appropriately titled "Theme in Search of a Sports Spectacular" is the killer track, as trumpeter Marcus Belgrave joins the band in an Olympic sprint, an irresistible melody that is catchy, infectious, memorable, and anthematic as any warrior clarion call to battle in the athletic arena. This driven, tenacious, forceful piece of music still stands the test of time for its ferocious attitude and champion-like strut.. The P-Vine label has issued this on CD (with two extra tracks; "Ron's Song" by trumpeter Ron Jackson, and "Kimba,") documenting not only the darkest days, but the bright hope a financially strapped Detroit offers to the rest of the world, and the determination Woodard always exemplified.

Jeff Austin – mandolin, vocals
Ben Kaufmann – bass, vocals
Adam Aijala – guitar, vocals, banjo on track 15
Other musicians:
Darol Anger – fiddle on tracks 11 & 15
Celeste Krenz – additional vocals on track 7
Mike Marshall – mandolin on track 15
Sally Van Meter – electric lap slide on track 7, additional vocals on track 7, resophonic guitar on track 8

This Nederland, CO, band's brand of string band music is as steeped in the jam band tradition as it is in the high and lonesome bluegrass sounds originated by Bill Monroe. Though this isn't the first band to blend these influences, driving rhythms and exceptional picking make for an enjoyable debut, if not one without definite weaknesses. The band's vocals and songwriting talents (all four members sing and write) simply don't equal its instrumental abilities. Banjo player Dave Johnston's keening tenor sounds most believable floating above the band's rustic groove on "The Lonesome Heart" and the jukebox-ready alt-country weeper "Eight Cylinders." Jeff Austin is fast-fingered on the mandolin but sings too near the top of his limited vocal range. The Yonder Mountain String Band's chops put many of the album's weaker songs over anyway, suggesting that the band's live shows will make them wildly popular on the jam band and bluegrass festival circuits, where songwriting and singing are very often secondary to instrumental flash. Progressive bluegrassers Mike Marshall and Darol Anger make guest appearances.

As its title implies, Town By Town, the Yonder Mountain String Band's second studio recording and third CD overall, is something of a concept album about life on the road, the reality for the quartet's members since the group's formation. Mandolin player Jeff Austin's "New Horizons" concerns the rescue of a family from a flood, and guitarist Adam Aijala's "A Father's Arms" is a war story with a Vietnam-era tone, but even these two songs are about family and dislocation, and the rest of the songs are dominated by references to travel, with the necessary impact on the singers' love lives, resulting either in breakups or pleas for fidelity, a major factor. But the lyrics of these original songs penned by the band members, sung in their uniformly reedy tenors, are less significant than the music underlying them, a familiar mixture of fast-picked guitar, mandolin, and banjo, with producer Tim O'Brien adding welcome fiddle and bouzouki lines here and there. In addition to three outright instrumentals ("Easy As Pie," "Wildewood Drive," and "Hog Potato"), "New Horizons" and "Peace of Mind" both contain extended instrumental sections that go beyond the term "breakdown" into the kind of loose improvisation typical of rock bands like the Grateful Dead, justifying the group's inclusion under the jam band umbrella. Nevertheless, there is plenty here to enthuse a traditional bluegrass fan. (After three minutes of silence at the end of "Peace of Mind" comes a six-plus-minute hidden track, probably titled "Dance, Boatman, Dance," which is taken at a sprightly square dance tempo and features O'Brien's fiddle extensively.)

Musicians:
Chad Urmston - vocals, guitar, trombone, bass, percussion;
Pete Heimbold - vocals, bass, guitar;
Brad Corrigan - vocals, drums, percussion, guitar, harmonica;
Geoff Burke - sax.

The New England trio Dispatch are back with their second full-length album, Bang Bang, a sharp collection of ten songs that is pleasing on all ends of the musical spectrum, from instruments to vocals to songwriting. Rarely does the record fall into a pattern, and instead Dispatch rotate their sound, from Guster-esque mellowness to the quick style of Sublime. And sometimes they make the transition within the same song. "Bats in the Belfry" is a perfect example of this musical mix, with the trombones and a Sublime-like tempo during the chorus, and a more mellow speed orchestrated perfectly by lead singer Brad Corrigan for the rest of the song. Conversely, the album's next track, "The General," performs the opposite by reserving the mellowness for the chorus and hitting the fast tempo right from the song's onset. The standout song on the album is, in fact, one of the simpler tracks. It's absent the percussion and other ska-influenced sounds that are abundant on the rest of the album. This by no means implies that these sounds don't work perfectly on the record, because they do, but "Two Coins" is special because it's just an acoustic guitar and vocals, in addition to pretty powerful lyrics. The original and ear-pleasing "Two Coins" marks a transition of sorts for the album, as the final three tracks are closer to rock and pop songs than ska songs. "Whirlwind" is far more musically diverse than the stripped-down "Two Coins." At just under five minutes, it's the record's longest track, and well worth the listening time. The album then concludes on a strong note with "Out Loud," which returns to the acoustic guitar in the lead and relies on Corrigan's wonderful voice, creating a song that certainly will be heard by the audience at any of Dispatch's live shows. Dispatch have identified themselves as a mainstay in the music world because of their diverse sound and willingness to experiment. Bang Bang has only allowed them to grow, and they should continue to do so in future efforts.

11. Running - 2:37
12. Never Say Goodbye - 2:39

Claude Hay’s new album Roller Coaster is a corn dog wrapped in a funnel cake with a deep-fried Oreo for dessert. The album kicks off with “Burn,” a Cyclone of a blues-pop-rock beast, that doesn’t make you keep your arms and hands inside the vehicle. Soon to follow, “Rollercoaster,” the album’s namesake is a powerful slightly dark and anything but cliche, blues masterpiece.
In fact, the whole album while completely falling into the blues genre refuses to let itself be defined on such simple terms. Instead Hay writes short, witty songs, some up beat and in need of a Corkscrew, some downbeat and serious that take you on a Voyage, but always something new and fresh. Quite a few of the tracks have a hint (or more) of banjo, completely owning the gypsy vibe the album gives off.  My favorite track, “241,” is a Magnum of a song about a Bizarro shopping experience. Claude Hay is a Maverick on an Outlaw Run, a songwriter, doing his own thing and having great success at doing it. Writing an album while spending the majority of your time touring Australia and Europe is a Goliath of a task, and a first time for Hay to be writing songs specifically for a full band performance instead of preparing for a solo tour. If you just close your eyes and listen, the album comes with a free Coney Island style freak show. Roller Coaster is a Steel Force to be reckoned with.

 6. Major Major - 5:03
 7. Aeolia - 6:14
 8. Stumma Cake - 6:05

Featuring Gary Versace (organ) and Mark Ferber (drums), the comfort and easy rapport is apparent as they groove their way through full tilt improvisation, funk, blues, swing, South American and Balkan rhythms in this update of the time honored organ trio.
Shepik writes about Top Down- "These compositions (except Gary Peacock's Major Major) were written in the late spring/early summer of 2015. Friday evokes a wide open elation I feel working in my studio in Brooklyn. Sweet Suzy, written just a few days before the recording recalls the Meter's and the blues and was a highlight of the recording for me. There's more than a hint of one of my favorite guitarists, John Scofield, on this tune. Coincidentally, on the morning of the day of this album's second recording session, I had the honor to record a song with him along with Peter Bernstein and Adam Rogers as part of an New York University Guitar Ensemble record. Vampa has South American feel though I didn't have a specific regional rhythm in mind. The tune's harmonic/rhythmic structure leaves a lot of room for melodic invention and suggested a conversation in the trading choruses. Hall is dedicated to Jim Hall, the giant of the guitar whose influence is felt on every generation of guitarists that have come along since the the late 1950's. Something in the wide melodic intervals and fluid rhythm suggested his artistry. Top in the Middle is a bluesy AABC form however the chords deviate and suggest a somewhat difficult climb to the goal. The title refers to the inevitable mix of sweet and bitter as life unfolds. Major Major has been a favorite tune from Gary Peacock's "Tales of Another" for many years, I had the privilege of playing a session with him when I was 19. Aeolia is a circular tune with a 7/8 Balkan rhythm that reminds me of a friend who lives on a windy island. I was playing with harmonic colors and phrasing on Stumma Cake. The tune's title could be a dessert but the final two chords reflect a mild discomfort experienced occasionally by the very young."

Richard Elliot - Summer Madness

 7. Back to You - 4:43
 8. Ludicrous Speed - 5:11
 9. Summer Madness - 4:08
10. Mr. Nate’s Wild Ride - 4:26

When tenor saxophonist Richard Elliot began preparing Summer Madness, his follow-up to 2014’s critically acclaimed Lip Service, he knew exactly what he wanted to do. First and foremost, it had to be funky. "When I was growing up in the ’70s and first learning to play the saxophone,” he says, "I was mostly attracted to instrumentally based R&B and to jazz that had R&B roots. This record definitely goes down that path, leaning more on the funk side.”
He also knew precisely who he wanted to accompany him on the new music. "I wanted to involve my band,” Elliot says. "A lot of artists tour with a group of musicians, and then when it’s time to make a record they hook up with a producer and go into the studio and use completely different people that maybe they’ve never even met before. I feel that if you’re lucky enough to have a regular group of musicians that you work with, and you don’t draw on their talent and their inspirations, you’re short-changing yourself.”
Summer Madness is a new kind of Richard Elliot recording. For one thing, the cast includes two other horn men augmenting Elliot’s signature sax work: trumpeter/trombonist Rick Braun, who also produced the album and, on several tracks, baritone saxophonist Curt Waylee. Most importantly though, the music was created from scratch as Elliot and his handpicked musicians formulated and honed their ideas in the studio, with Braun’s ultra-capable guidance. For Elliot, recruiting the additional players and having the entire band—plus a well-respected veteran producer help him shape the music—was integral to the project’s success.
"I didn’t want to direct them,” he says. "I wanted to bring them in and let them be part of the process—the writing, the arranging—and to do it all together. I had a lot of confidence that these guys are mature enough musically. Everybody brought what they do to the table and we all put our heads together. We didn’t have rehearsals first, we didn’t have writing sessions first. We booked some days in the studio and the music just poured out.”
The result of these impromptu jams—seven new originals and three classic interpretations—is unquestionably one of the most electrifying and gratifying recordings of Richard Elliot’s three-plus-decade solo career. From the opening salvo, a super-funkified take on Spyro Gyra’s "Cachaca,” through the closing "Mr. Nate’s Wild Ride,” spotlighting bassist Nathaniel Phillips, who wrote the track along with Elliot and Braun, Summer Madness is one of those albums that simply takes hold the moment you press play and never lets go. Along the way it touches down on a variety of moods and styles, from Latin- and African-inspired funk to soul jazz, even flirting with fusion on the hard-driving, appropriately titled "Ludicrous Speed.”
A couple of sparkling ballads pay tribute to heroes of Elliot’s going back to his earliest days of musical discovery: "Europa,” on which he honors one of his saxophone inspirations, the late Gato Barbieri—who famously remade the Carlos Santana-penned track in his own image, and the title track "Summer Madness,” a mid-’70s hit for funk titans Kool & the Gang.
Among the original compositions, "Harry the Hipster,” says Elliot, "is reminiscent of songs that had cool, recurring melodies and a funky pulse—the idea was not to wrap yourself up in how much complexity you could put into the song, but how much feeling and groove can you put into the song?” Another highlight, the band-written "West Coast Jam,” is Elliot’s nod to yet another influence, the late leader of funk trailblazers Zapp, Roger Troutman, while "Breakin’ It Down,” which arrives early on Summer Madness, is designed, he says, to bridge the genres of funk and contemporary jazz, with which Elliot has long been associated. "I sort of formulated that theory later though,” he confesses. "When we were making the music we were just making it.”
It should come as no surprise to Elliot’s longtime fans that he would, at some point in his career, choose to celebrate funk in such a dedicated, decisive way. It was, after all, with the legendary Tower of Power that many first heard the saxophone virtuosity of Richard Elliot. Although he was born in Scotland and grew up in Los Angeles, where he started playing saxophone while in middle school, his five-year run with the Bay Area institution ToP during the 1980s was when Richard Elliot first came to prominence.
"I learned more about being a musician, about being a performer, about being a team player in a horn section, about how to make a statement when you step out and do a solo, from being with Tower of Power than from any other group or artist I ever worked with,” Elliot says, adding that it was "initially terrifying” to find himself among some of the most accomplished and highly respected musicians on the funk/R&B scene. In fact, he learned enough from working with them, Elliot says now, to know that he was ready to go off on his own when he did.
"Leaving Tower of Power was the hardest decision I ever made,” he says now, but great things were to follow almost immediately. By the late ’80s, Elliot had launched his solo career and was signed to Blue Note Records, where he worked with the legendary record executive Bruce Lundvall, an early champion of Elliot’s work. Since then, Elliot has released more than 20 albums as a leader, and has also polished his chops serving as a sideman for a considerable list of diverse giants, including Motown hitmakers Smokey Robinson and the Temptations. One of Elliot’s favorite projects was the collaborative 2013 release Summer Horns, which found him teaming up with fellow sax-slingers Dave Koz, Gerald Albright and Mindi Abair—the album was nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best Pop Instrumental Album.
Throughout all of his music, Richard Elliot has always strived to achieve one certain goal. "Miles Davis said, ‘The hardest thing for a musician to do is sound like himself.’ That stuck with me,” Elliot says. "If you fixate on a single influence, you tend to sound like someone who’s trying to sound like that person. I never know if I’ve achieved that goal but on occasion I’ve had someone come up to me and say, ‘I heard a song on the radio and I knew it was you.’" Summer Madness puts a bit of a new twist on the classic Richard Elliot sound, but you won’t doubt for a single second who you are hearing.

Fire Red Moon is neither the arena rock of Craig Chaquico’s days with Jefferson Starship, nor the chart-topping smooth jazz that he initially turned to as a solo artist. It’s something grittier, more primordial — and utterly surprising.  Yet, there he is, chugging and juking with vocalist Noah Hunt (Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band) through “Lie to Me,” the first of seven originals on Fire Red Moon, due on October 16, 2012, from Blind Pig Records. Chaquico also tears into tracks from the likes of Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson, and brilliantly reworks the Albert King classic “Born Under a Bad Sign” as a scalding instrumental.  There’s none of the brawny crunch associated with his mainstream Starship hits, and none of the satiny ruminations of Acoustic Planet — nominated for a new age Grammy in 1995. Chaquico, often alongside touring vocalist Rolf Hartley, instead settles into a dusty-booted groove on “Devil’s Daughter,” then goes to the bottom of a brown bottle with singer Eric E. Golbach on “Bad Woman.” “Little Red Shoes,” as with “Devil’s Daughter,” occasionally betrays just a hint of his pop-chart-topping penchant for a hook, while “Blue on Blue” almost gets quiet enough to recall his more recent smooth jazz past, but Fire Red Moon never strays too far from its central roots-rocking, occasionally Santana-esque theme.  Meanwhile, instrumentals like the fire-kissed title track, the groove-laden “Fogtown Stroll,” and of course the Booker T. Jones/William Bell-penned “Bad Sign,” give the guitarist the chance to use muscles he hasn’t in ages. Finally, there’s “Crossroads,” which Chaquico — in a nod to his classic-rock beginnings — performs with the double-time virtuosity of Eric Clapton’s Cream. As with his take on Muddy’s “Rollin’ and Tumblin,” there’s little chance to do something definitive here, so ingrained are these musical memories. But give Chaquico credit for this: Here, as elsewhere on the captivating Fire Red Moon, he flings himself into both tunes with a furious abandon.  A central figure in Jefferson Starship from 1973-1990, Chaquico wrote or co-wrote hits like “Find Your Way Back,” “Laying It on the Line” and “Jane,” while adding signature guitar elements to “Miracles,” “Count on Me,” “We Built This City,” “Sara” and others. Many were surprised when he spent much of the next period downshifting into quieter instrumental efforts. In some ways, Chaquico’s new turn toward blues and rootsier music on Fire Red Moon — marking his debut for Blind Pig Records — is just as unexpected.
But Chaquico, who came of age in the polyglot-rock atmosphere of turn-of-the-1970s San Francisco, clearly has a deep affinity for this, as well. As he tears through the familiar mid-century triumphs included here, even while adding similarly constructed originals that both celebrate and amplify those earlier influences. Along the way, Chaquico stakes his claim in yet another musical genre — and, even though he just arrived, already sounds right at home.

Quoted by Blues Matters as being “a gift to all of us from the Blues Gods”, Sari Schorr finally gets to release her debut album, A Force Of Nature, on 2nd September.
Initially gaining prominence throughout the blues world after several years of touring America, Australia and Europe with blues legend, Joe Louis Walker and renowned guitarist Popa Chubby, this New Yorker is fast becoming one of the hottest new blues rock singers of 2016.
Produced by Mike Vernon and joined by The Engine Room guitarist Innes Sibun, together with Oli Brown, keyboardist John Baggott and special guest Walter Trout, this is an album which will make you press the repeat button over and over again.  Opening with gentle smoothie Ain’t Got No Money, written about the Wall Street Brokers and their insatiable greed, is not reflective of the rest of the album, because there is nothing gentle about it as it pounds to great crescendos then brings you right back down. With a voice that has been likened to Janis Joplin and Tina Turner, it is easy to see why, as the track Aunt Hazel (urban slang for Heroin) showcases her magnificent voice. This is a great track with Innes Sibun bringing the whole thing alive with his exquisite guitar work.  Having written or co-written most of the tracks, this album is very much Schorr’s own work. It has been cleverly produced by Vernon in that one track makes you rock whilst the next like Damn The Reason brings you right back down with its slow but powerful lyrics about domestic violence, and with Oli Brown’s influence it makes it one of the stand out tracks.  The lighter and pseudo funky groove of Cat And Mouse follows before giving way to a striking cover of Huddie ‘Lead Belly’ Leadbetter’s Black Betty, which is stripped right back and takes on a whole new lease of life with its special arrangement done by Sibun and Schorr.  Walter Trout’s own blues number Work No More is given the Schorr treatment and features the great man himself. Defining what it is to have lost a dear friend, Trout’s impressive six string licks sit perfectly with Schorr’s searing vocals.  Other tracks, like Demolition Man illustrate just how good her accompanying musicians are, whilst Letting Go is poignant and was touchingly written for Natalie Vernon, the late wife of Mike Vernon.  Kiss Me is like a journey back in time with its nod to psychedelic infused rock as it steps the album up a gear. A real delight is Vernon’s remake of a song that has been the sole property of The Supremes for over half a century; Stop! In The Name Of Love. To bluesify such a soul pop classic is a genius idea and it works really well as Schorr not only steals the song but becomes the firm owner of it.  From the high of that track she brings you right back down with closer and intensely slow emotional song, Ordinary Life, which just shows her vocal versatility.  Sari Schorr is no newcomer to the music industry. But it took a chance meeting with Vernon to get this near faultless album off the ground. So not only did the Blues Gods send us Schorr, they must also have engineered the meeting, and on listening to this album, we should all be saying a massive thank you.

The modern rock five-piece Jupiter Coyote spawns a technicolor blend of bluegrass and American trad rock. Matthew Mayes (guitar) and childhood friend John Felty (vocals/guitar) started the band in their native Brevard, NC, as a means to earn some money in college. They spent the early '90s playing frat houses and small bars, sharpening their funk and country-pop stylings. Several bandmembers came and went and by the mid-'90s, Mayes and Felty had made Jupiter Coyote their careers. Their steady five-piece, which consists of Mayes, Felty, Steve Trismen (fiddle), Noel Felty (drums), and Sanders Brightwell (bass), was intact by the new millennium. Their album roster includes Cemetaries & Junkyards (1993), Lucky Day (1995), Ghost Dance (1997), and Here Be Dragons (1998). The Live album followed in 2000 with Waxing Moon appearing a year later. Jupiter Coyote plays nearly 200 shows a year and continues to be a mainstay in the South.

It would be understandable if blues veteran Duke Robillard chose to bask in the glory of his 2015 album The Acoustic Blues & Roots of Duke Robillard a wee bit longer. That album earned the talented guitarist a Blues Music Award for “Acoustic Album of the Year” amid some stiff competition as well as universal critical acclaim. Still, here we are, a year later and Robillard is preparing Blues Full Circle, his latest and greatest, for release on September 9th, 2016 by his long-time label, Stony Plain Records.
Blues Full Circle was produced by Robillard and recorded at both his own Duke’s Mood Room studio as well as at Lakewest Recording in Rhode Island. The new album captures Robillard’s extraordinary guitar tone and nimble-fingered playing with a small combo, the guitarist joined by keyboardist Bruce Bears, bassist Brad Hallen, and drummer Mark Teixeira. The album can boast of some star-power guest appearances from folks like Jimmie Vaughan, who double-teams with the Duke on the instrumental “Shufflin’ and Scufflin’,” Sugar Ray Norcia from Sugar Ray & the Bluetones adds vocals to the song “Last Night,” and pianist Kelley Hunt adds some boogie beat to “The Mood Room.” Other guests appearing on Blues Full Circle include saxophonists Gordon “Sax” Beadle and Doug James.
“This album really does represent a full circle of blues for me,” says Robillard in a press release for Blues Full Circle. “Eight of the tunes are new compositions and three tunes here represent songs I wrote as much as 30 to 45 years ago when I was leader and front man for the original Roomful of Blues in the 1970s. We hope you enjoy our back to the basics approach to the music here. Just straightforward small band, old school blues.” In between his previous album and this one, Robillard experienced a potentially career-threatening injury. “The original session for this album yielded seven of the tunes here in a short afternoon session,” explains Robillard. “That was about a month or two before my rotator cuff simply gave out and became disconnected on a gig.”
“Unfortunately, soon after, I was unable to play guitar at all for close to a year,” adds Robillard. “The months and months of physical therapy after surgery was a depressing time, but these things sometimes are clouds with silver linings, and I put myself into an art frame of mind as I dove back into photography and painting.” Robillard painted the album cover artwork for Blues Full Circle and also had an exhibition of his photography at the Van Vassem in Tiverton Rhode Island during his layoff. The Duke’s fans need not worry, though, ‘cause the guitarist is back and playing better than ever, Blues Full Circle a sure-fire bet for a nomination come Blues Music Awards season.

But have now settled into a new groove. Pete’s song writing, singing and guitar playing have evolved into something that can’t quite be described or put under genre titles, but still remain comfortable in the Blues / Roots camp.
His new album entitled ‘Tumbleweed’ features 6 original songs and a few handpicked covers from Neil Young, Allen Toussaint and Rory Gallagher. It also features a new line-up, Henry Nichols – Drums & Percussion, Randal Muir – Hammond Organ & Piano, Kelly Ottoway – Wurlitzer & Piano, Ian Collard – Harmonica, Jane McArthur – Vocals, Carmel Claxton – Vocals and Pete Cornelius – Guitar, Bass & Vocals.

For die-hard fans like myself, a new Devin Townsend release is nothing short of an event worthy of a national holiday, with so much of the anticipation coming down to not knowing what to expect. Townsend’s output has become increasingly genre-defying, with dark ambient, experimental noise, and even country, nestling alongside progressive and extreme metal. The latest release falls under the Devin Townsend Project banner and continues the epic progressive metal that started with Addicted, through to Epicloud and Z2 most recently, evolving the sound rather than completely reinventing it.  Transcendence is a release that seems to look back, evidenced by opener ‘Truth’, a reworking of the same track that opened 1998’s Infinity. It may seem strange to open Transcendence with an old song, but I think it shows that we’re dealing with similar themes: the nature of the universe, human consciousness, and other similarly metaphysical and grandiose subjects. However, the key here is that Townsend is approaching these ideas with an entirely new frame of mind. This isn’t the post-mental breakdown, potentially drug-addled Townsend of 1998 – this is the sober and grown-up Townsend of nowadays, who examines the same questions with a view that is unclouded and grounded in a truth far more believable than the ‘Truth’ of Infinity. The song ends with Townsend softly singing “everything’s changed” and you get the impression he’s in a better place than he’s ever been before.
There are two other notable differences that jump out to me on listening to Transcendence’s opener, the first being the production. Townsend has always been known for a huge production style and while the scope of that sound hasn’t changed, it’s far tighter than it’s ever been before, with this probably being the best-produced Townsend album I’ve ever heard. This improvement seems to have come about from change in the way Townsend wrote and produced Transcendence. Instead of taking charge of all aspects of the making of the album, Townsend opened up and allowed greater input from the rest of the band, saying “I like to think after so many records with these guys that I don’t really have to be at the center of everything. I can trust a team of people – the right people – to help where I need help.” This help extended to the engineering, “I need an engineer who has better ears than me. My ears are getting tired after all these years.” The improvement a fresh pair of ears makes is evident and while Townsend is still directing the experience, more collaboration has led to more ideas and if this reduces the likelihood of burnout, I’m all for it.
The second of the two notable differences evident on ‘Truth’ is that the drumming is the best we’ve yet to hear on a Townsend release. For speed and sheer brutality Gene Hoglan’s your go-to guy, but Ryan Van Poederooyen has outdone himself on Transcendence, and you get the feeling he’s had greater creative control. Either that or he’s simply at the top of his game.
When ‘Truth’ finishes we’re left with the sparkling synth we became familiar with on Infinity, and no matter how many times I listen to it I can’t help but expect the snare rudiment of ‘War’ launching us into ‘Christeen’. Instead, we’re greeted by ‘Stormbending’, a song that brings to mind both 2003’s Accelerated Evolution as it does 1997’s Ocean Machine, the latter evoked in the echoey line, “I remember the rainy days in China Town”. ‘Stormbending’ is grand in scope, soundtrack-like in its evocative level of expression – if your soul is not lifted at the grand climax around 4 minutes in, you’ve got some searching to do.
The soundtrack level of spine-tingling doesn’t end on ‘Failure’. Three tracks in and we see that while Transcendence is instantly familiar, it manages to be refreshing and novel, with hooks so strong that they only improve with repeated listens. Also on display is some of the best singing yet from Townsend, with higher registers fearlessly explored. As I listen to this song, I cannot help picture in my mind the trailer to this album, hair-raising in its theatrical intensity.
Single ‘Secret Sciences’ hits all the right chords when it comes to positioning Townsend as the leader of “happy metal”, while ‘Higher’ reaches Strapping Young Lad levels of heaviness and is one of the best songs on the album: it begins gently with acoustic guitars and explodes halfway in, rapid double kick drum abound as do shouted vocals. At 8 minutes a choir-led crescendo supports the song’s transcendental theme. If Infinity was Townsend’s God-complex then ‘Higher’ shifts this perspective to something more mortal, looking down at himself rather than down at everyone else.
The rest of Transcendence continues to surprise and delight at every turn. Title track ‘Transcendence’ lives up to its name; ‘Offer Your Light’ is J-pop in its electro euphoria; while ballad ‘From The Heart’ slows things right down. The final track ‘Transdermal Celebration’ is a cover of the Ween original that ends things in typical arm-waving fashion.
Transcendence is certainly up there with the best of Devin Townsend’s albums and while it’s more evolution than reinvention, the increased collaboration hints at even greater experimentation to come in the future.

This album of the quintet from North Carolina! They are considered one of the most established Southern Rock / Jamrock bands of today, what they put on their refreshing new work again lasting proof. Two reshuffles there has been in the band: on the one hand was the new drummer Noel Felty, on the other hand, the violinist and singer Steve Trismen, the rather strongly influenced the "new" sound. Of course, we still hear the typical Jupiter Coyote-riffs and grooves with this certain Southern feeling, but Trismen's Fiddle is extremely dominant and often stands strong in the foreground. You lack in any single song! Thus, from the twin-guitar sound often something like a "semi Fiddle / Guitar" sound. Both instruments are often used in parallel. Highlights of the album are the 7-minute "Spiral" with great slide guitar, fine percussion and an endless jam feeling, as well as the "Train Song", which is also gebragt of beautiful guitar work and certainly the Allman Brothers well to shame , In track 7, with the funny caption "Rumplestiltskin" guessed one even Doobie Brothers -Parallelen. Ordinary part!

“Mountain Rock” -- a mixture of Southern Appalachian boogie and bluegrass-infused, funk-rock.
This cd is overflowing with the mischievous charm of 5 young roustabouts from the Carolinas whose voices had practically not even finished changing at the time this was recorded. Yet, to foretell the serious evolution of their writing and performing skills, several of the songs belie the sober contemplation of the poet, Matthew B. Mayes, to whom I ascribe the nickname, "le Bard de Brevard." Matthew's keen insights are filtered through a different prism than most of us will ever view unless we are fortunate to be active listeners of the interplanetary yard dog, Jupiter Coyote. Buy this cd, if only for the song, "Willow," which is one of the greatest jammin' southern rock tunes that meanders seamlessly through teasers of the Doobies, Allmans, Skynyrd, Santana, and the Doors all in one jammin 14 minute tune that starts out melancholy but builds and finishes in a breakneck pace that will leave you breathless.

In April of 2004, Dave went into the recording studio with his band to cut his debut album, You Don't Love Me. The album was recorded "live" and showcases his phrasing, technical ability, and tone. The album features Dave Gross on guitar and vocals, AJ Hager on bass, and Matt Mousseau on drums. 10 tracks and just under 45 minutes long, this record captures his sound at this point in time, as his style is frequently diversifying.
At only 19, Dave Gross already leads a blues band of seasoned pros. His raw talent and drive for success, in conjunction with his admiration for the blues has turned Dave into one of the top players in the northeast.
Dave has a wide range of influences including T-Bone Walker, Albert Collins, Arthur Neilson, Albert King, Freddie King, BB King, Danny Gatton, Charlie Christian, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Duke Robillard, Tiny Grimes, Django Reinhardt, and Anson Funderburgh to name a few.
Even at his young age, Dave has already shared stages across the northeast with such national blues artists as Duke Robillard, Popa Chubby, Debbie Davies, Arthur Neilson (guitarist for Shemekia Copeland), AJ Hager (bassist for Debbie Davies), Big Ed Sullivan, Joe Taino, Christine Santelli, Dona Oxford, Sly Geralds, among many other touring musicians.
What is remarkable is witnessing the constant improvements in this young musician's playing. Dave always holds the audience's attention. He always knows just the note to play and when to play it. Dave looks forward to a long and fulfilling career as a blues musician.

Not a NWOBHM release actually since it was recorded and "released" in 2001, this is something not many people have heard about. Red Hunter features the three Whitbread brothers better known for being the force behind a NWOBHM legend: ARC!!! This album, only "available" as a CD-R, is really great and sounds exactly as it should! It even contains a remake of ARC's song Ice cream theme (New millenium) I would love to see this out on vinyl sometime as it really is something great but I really doubt it, so until then here's a rip from my CD (full with cover scans!) and I hope you enjoy it!!! Some songs are rerecorded versions of tracks appearing on the vinyl singles by the band ARC, containing different lyrics.

 6. Round and Around - 3:27
 7. The Rhythm Of Life - 3:53
 8. Nothin Like Dat Funky Funky Music - 4:55
 9. Comin Home To You Hawaii - 5:29

The holy grail of Hawaiian Funk has landed! Mike Lundy originally recorded his solo LP The Rhythm Of Life in Honolulu in 1980, sharing the same studio with Hawaiian funk legends Lemuria and Aura. Both sides of this 7" are essential: heavy funk breaks on "The Rhythm Of Life" and breezy island sounds on "Tropic Lightning". This is the first time both tracks have ever been available on 7-inch format. Limited to 500 copies worldwide, this marks the first release from Honolulu-based reissue label Aloha Got Soul. If there has yet to be the perfect addition to MIMS’ Forgotten Treasures archive, let this be it.  When I first approached Hawaiian funk-and-soul maven Mike Lundy about reissuing the music from his solo 1980 LP The Rhythm Of Life, one of my initial requests was for him to dig up whatever vintage photos he might have from the recording sessions. It has now been 35 years since Mike Lundy originally released The Rhythm Of Life here in Honolulu. Of course, with time memories begin to fade. So when Mike finally found a stack of old photo albums in storage, many of the memories from his days as a professional musician in Hawaii came back. During his search for old photographs, Mike also found a notebook from that time, one that he kept with him throughout the entire recording sessions to jot notes and ideas for The Rhythm Of Life.
When he dusted off the notebook, Mike discovered something he had forgotten a long time ago: that the original plan for The Rhythm Of Life was not to record a full-length LP, but a 7-inch single. Slated for the single’s A-side was a beast of a funk tune called “The Rhythm Of Life.” The B-side was to be “Tropic Lightning”. That single never happened, only because Mike’s producer at the time realized they had enough material to do an LP.  I had no idea of this when I first approached Mike last year. Neither did he. I told him I wanted to reissue his full LP, starting with a 45 featuring two of my favorite tracks. It was only when we started piecing together the story of his highly sought-after LP that we chanced upon this delightful detail he’d forgotten all about.

 9. Double Trouble - 3:17
10. Just To Satisfy You - 3:28

Small time Florida blues label that should have been in same league with alligator & blind pig. great blues and southern blues rock that should not be overlooked.
One of the pleasures of traveling around the U.S. is listening to bar bands in out of the way dives. Whether you're in Oregon, Georgia, Colorado, or Pennsylvania, a good bar band may not be cutting-edge, trendy, or experimental but can win you over with its infectiousness and its sense of fun. One such bar band is Dr. Hector & the Groove Injectors, whose Emergency makes you feel like you've wandered into a cool dive somewhere in Middle America.
People who heard this 1991 release tended to place it in the blues-rock category - and, to be sure, "Downtown Drinking" "14 Carat Fool," and "Bad News" are catchy examples of blues-rock. But many of the other tunes are best described as roots rock with a strong southern soul influence. Tracks like "Southern Fried Groove" and "Don't Be Afraid" give the impression that Dr. Hector & the Groove Injectors have spent a lot of time listening to Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave, and other southern-style soulsters who were big in the 1960s.
And, in fact, Dr. Hector & the Groove Injectors are a southern band; Emergency was recorded at King Snake's Sanford, FL studio. Although not the most original album in the world, Emergency is easy to enjoy if you have a taste for earthy, unpretentious bar bands.

Musicians:

Joakim Barcheus - harmonica;
Lars Nasman - bass;
Bjorn Viitanen - drums;
Tommy Moberg - vocals.

Recommended. It's doubtful that Sweden is high on anyone's list of top blues locales, but one spin of Trickbag will convince listeners it's not without its merits. This 5-piece band is impressive and steeped in blues, particularly the swinging West Coast approach of artists like Rod Piazza, William Clarke, George Smith, and others. From the drilling opener, Home Brewed Boogie, it's immediately evident that these guys have studied the form and honed their craft. Tommy Moberg's vocals are powerful without as much as a hint of an accent while the guitar work of Magnus Sjolin has elements of T-Bone Walker, Pee Wee Crayton, and Junior Watson, among more. Joachim Barcheus handles the harp chores with plenty of chops and a deep appreciation for tone, and the rhythm section of Lars Nasman and Bjorn Viitanen have the ability to drive the band effortlessly, whether charting the course through the Texas double-shuffle of Sweets For Somebody, the vintage rock and roll feel of Goin' Home, or the lowdown South Side Chicago grip in A.J. Rumble. Sjolin's guitar is well to the fore in his own Come Back Tomorrow and the crunching jump of the title track, but everyone delivers regardless of the groove or tempo. The high point could be Too Fat For A Suit which displays the band's ability to hit the mark on all counts; instrumentation, feel, attack, and dynamics. Fleshed out with horns on a handful, as well as piano and organ on a few, these guys have the goods and deliver an all-original set of blues, boogie, and swing.
