Musicians:
Raphael Wressnig - Hammond B-3 organ, vocals, Fender Rhodes, Hohner D-6 clavinet, Wurlitzer piano, tambourin, cowbell;
Alex Schultz - guitars;
James Gadson - drums, tambourin.
Chicken Burrito was recorded in the blues mecca of Los Angeles, which seems entirely appropriate as both guitarist Alex Schultz and drummer James Gadson have recorded and performed together in the City of Angels since the mid-90’s. Gadson’s resume includes being a founding member of Charles Wright and the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Section. He appears on all the great Columbia recordings by Bill Withers which yielded one hit song after another in the early 70’s. He has played with everybody from Ray Charles to Paul McCartney and from Lynwood Slim to Beck.
Schultz too has an impressive resume which includes a long stint with Rod Piazza’s Mighty Flyers during the halcyon days of that band’s career. He was that smiling guitarist who was a Mighty Flyer between Junior Watson and Rick Holmstrom. Through the years Schultz has split time between Los Angeles and Europe, the latter is where his association with the young B3 phenom Raphael Wressnig began back in 2002.
Wressnig is an ambitious artist who started out his recording career making four albums with a fellow Austrian, guitarist and vocalist Sir Oliver Mally. Then Wressnig went on to record seventeen (by my count) more albums under his own name. He has worked extensively with guitarist Schultz as mentioned, as well as the terrific Italian guitarist Enrico Crivilaro.
Chicken Burrito may be the most personal album by Wressnig as he wrote all the tracks on the album and completely surrenders his soul to the almighty groove which has always been central to his music. The only vocal turn is by Wressnig who gives listeners a spoken word autobiographical travelogue on the song Born To Roam. Beyond that the music does the talking and it speaks volumes.
Chicken Burrito is a wonderful vehicle for three like-minded individuals who bring their own diverse talents together to make an extraordinary album. If you’re feeling groovy then this album is for you. - David Mac
