David Clayton-Thomas, the former lead singer of Blood, Sweat and Tears, possesses one of the greatest singing voices of all time. Time has been kind to David, who was 72 years old when this album was recorded. If anything, his strong voice has gotten even deeper over the years. In addition, David wrote all of the songs on this album. The song "A Blues For The New World" starts the album out on a strong note. The topical song begins with the brass section, making it sound like an outtake from a Blood, Sweat and Tears album. The song deals with the strange and troubled times that we live in, but never in a preachy way. "Common Ground," a song about David's daughter and his relationship with her, was performed a cappella with a vocal quartet called Cadence. Even though there was no instrumental backing, the singers did perfect imitations of horns and a harmonica during the song! "Politics" is a socially conscious song, performed in a disarming reggae style. The song "Holy Moses" deals with Biblical themes, in an emotional gospel style. The jazzy song "It Ain't Free" deals with people's loss of privacy in the Internet age. The closing song, "The Lights On Broadway," deals with the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York City. Despite the horrors of that event, the album ends on an uplifting theme, noting that the lights up on Broadway still shine. This is arguably the best album that David Clayton-Thomas has ever done, and compares favorably with the best songs he did as the lead singer of Blood, Sweat and Tears.
