Since the early 80s, keyboardist Tom Grant has remained one of instrumental music's great constants. No matter how styles change, his lush elegance, easygoing improvisational appraoch and potent way with melody have always been a comfort. You pretty much know what to expect each time out -- lots of sweet ear candy with just enough edge here and there to keep listeners on their toes. This collection keeps all those traditions alive, with his tender acoustic work being its primary strength. To compensate for a by the book reworking of Daryl Hall's "Every Time You Go Away," Grant partakes in a fanciful rain dance with synth flute on "The Water Spirits." But the real surprises come from guest artists like Paul Jackson, Jr. and especially saxman Art Porter, both of whom add much needed funk to Grant's compositions. Fewer vocals -- or performances by outside singers -- would help Grant remain focused on his bread and butter, those spirited keys, which still connect after all these years.
