Fusing classic blues and boogie sounds with a hot-wired hard rock attack and a side order of Southern rock attitude, guitarist Chris Colepaugh and his band the Cosmic Crew have won a loyal following the hard way, with a busy schedule of road work as the group made its way through the North American touring circuit. Originally from Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada, Colepaugh formed the group in 1996, teaming up with bassist Lynn Daigle and Craig Watson, the first of many drummers who would work with the group. (Watson would also write lyrics for many of Colepaugh's tunes.) Months later, the initial lineup of the group recorded its debut album, 1996's Galaxy, in a single day, as the band began playing steadily in the Maritime provinces in Eastern Canada. After winning a talent contest, Colepaugh and the Crew traveled to Halifax, Nova Scotia, where they recorded 1997's Mazes and Mirrors live in the studio. By this time, Watson had dropped out of the Crew, and Cameron Murphy had signed on as their drummer. In 1998, Murphy left the group, and Colepaugh began using two drummers, Kevin Macintyre and Danny Bourgeois, with the two trading off on live dates depending on availability. The group also briefly introduced a keyboard player to the Cosmic Crew, Andre Leblanc, but he left before the band could start work on 1999's Sixteen Second Solace, which saw the return of Craig Watson on drums. In 2001, Colepaugh released the album Trip, but while it was credited to him and the Cosmic Crew, he played all the instruments on it himself; for touring, Daigle returned on bass, and Remi Bourque replaced Macintyre in the drumming rotation. That same year, they were finalists on the CBC-TV music competition series The Great Canadian Music Dream, and they continued touring aggressively through Canada and the Eastern United States. The next CC&CC album, 2003's In Time, was also recorded with Colepaugh tackling all instruments, and in 2004 the guitarist left Canada for San Francisco, where he spent several months playing West Coast solo dates and writing new material. Plans for recording the next Cosmic Crew album were scuttled when a health emergency forced Colepaugh to have surgery to remove his gall bladder and he struggled through a long recovery process. It wasn't until 2006 that Colepaugh was able to complete his next release, In Your Backyard, which he recorded and produced in his own studio, as well as playing all the instruments; the album earned particularly enthusiastic reviews, and boosted Colepaugh's reputation in his native Canada. That same year, Colepaugh also sat in on the sessions for the LP A Cup of Cold Poison by Grady, featuring Gordie Johnson, a friend of Colepaugh who previously led the group Big Sugar. Colepaugh also began working with drummer Shawn Sasyniuk, who along with Danny Bourgeois became one of the Crew's two official drummers. In 2009, Colepaugh, Daigle, and Bourgeois showed off their chops as a stage act on their first live album, Burning. In 2009 Colepaugh was also tapped to play guitar with Roch Voisine, an award-winning singer, songwriter, actor, and radio host, accompanying Voisine on the road in Canada and Europe. Just a year later, Colepaugh emerged from his studio with another album, Missed a Page, which was named Album of the Year at the 2011 East Coast Music Awards. While Colepaugh and his band (who shortened their name from the Cosmic Crew to simply the Crew) stayed busy on the road, he also kept up an active schedule with Voisine and gigged with his side project Juggler's Whole, but Chris Colepaugh & the Crew announced a new album for release in 2016, with the tentative title Stateless. ~ Mark Deming

While a slightly patchy effort in comparison to later albums, Religion shows lead singer/mainman Tyson Meade and the Kittens still getting off to a good start all around. Its embrace of trashy punk glam, wonderfully out of tune with the incipient grunge empire of the early nineties, helped distinguish the group from the start. Meade's charismatic, delicious high-register singing and lyrical obsessions with kinky sex, death, madness and, indeed, religion called to mind understandable Ziggy Stardust comparisons, but he gives everything his own particularly fractured spin. When he breaks into one of his not infrequent yelps and wails, it suits the mood quite well. Musically, he and lead guitarist Metzger favor sprawl and chunky riffs, as much Ron Asheton and Steve Jones as Mick Ronson. The rhythm section is mostly there as opposed to being distinct, but they support Meade's cockeyed vision well enough, while random movie samples and some other touches flesh out the album. "Mother (of the ancient birth)" is the first song that totally lifts the Kittens up from being well-meaning if perversely mannered tribute fusion. Its quick clip and chewy chorus, poppy and punchy down to the handclaps while Meade sings of weird Freudian twists, serves as a great calling card for the band's abilities. From there everything winds up more furiously as it goes, one mascara-smeared aural car crash after another. Songtitles like "Death-Out at Party Central" and "Feel Like a Drugstore" are happily lived up to, while gentler numbers as "I'm Waiting (leeanne's song)" let Meade showcase his equally good, lower-pitched singing, soothing and smoky. The album wraps up with its best song, the lovely piano ballad "She's Gone Mad," covered live elsewhere by fellow Oklahomans the Flaming Lips. Meade's portrayal of the titular character is achingly sympathetic and matched by his performance perfectly.

The Soul Movers is a band borne of opportunity. For the first time in 30 years Australian guitarist Deniz Tek (and later keyboardist Pip Hoyle – both of Radio Birdman fame) had time to ‘fool around’ with the music that had been their passion from the very start. Lizzie Mack, having performed years earlier with Pip around some Jazz traps in Sydney, came up with a bunch of songs, which tapped into some classic soul themes: lost love, untrustworthy love and new beginnings. With Hothouse studios in St Kilda offering a slot to put down a first single The Soul Movers came to life almost overnight. “Our first single was put together over a weekend and then the album “On the IN side” was written, recorded and mastered in 17 days only a few months later. It all happened so fast we had to hang on for the ride”
This provides a clue to the appeal of the Soul Movers music. With strong soul roots the band has managed to imbue their music with a fresh, unselfconscious approach to the classic soul themes, delivering music which speaks directly to personal experience and with a rockin’ rhythm that ‘any ole fool’ can dance to.
As Lizzie Mack explains: “’Piece O Me’ set the standard and vein for a lot of the songs on the album. It has such a dark tint – for me anyway - as a song, and being the first to arrive, I was careful not to get too close to the space it holds with the other songs. Thankfully that expression of loss and longing came out so completely in ‘Piece O Me’ that I didn’t feel the need to revisit the theme again.”
“When we set out to put the 12 songs together we wanted to take the listener on a ride through relationships; from the first kiss, to the blind, transportative passion of feeling like you can leap tall buildings to halting emotions like betrayal and suspicion and then the journey to the depths of despair when it all lies in ruins”. ‘Few Good Reasons’, ‘Hold Me’, ‘Not With Her’, (the cover) ‘Dead’ and ‘Change’ are the result.
When it came to finding some covers that would mesh with the theme we threw the net fairly wide, looking for classics that hadn’t been covered to our knowledge. Sugar Pie De Santos ‘positive and personal’ feel really nailed it for us and she provided the bright red, uplifting feel our song palette was missing. ‘Carolyn Sullivan’s version of ‘Dead’ took us to a still, ‘Beat’ graveyard and who can go past Aretha. As Jazz singer Julie London had been a big inspiration to Lizzie who shares some similar tones and inflections in her voice. Other influences include Etta James.
The Soul Movers have had the luxury of hiring various ‘top flite’ musicians around the world to promote their first album. Bassists Andy Newman, Craig Harnath and Bob Brown – all music veterans - join forces with drummers Calvin Welsh, Brett Wolfenden and Steve Brown and Keyboardists Ron Sanchez and Pip Hoyle offer the opportunity for the core combination of Deniz and Lizzie to spread their sound around. “It’s great getting to work with similarly minded musicians we have used in other lineups and who all share a love of soul,” Deniz explains.
The Soul Movers becomes a moveable feast in 2009 with shows in Australia, North America and Europe happening August through October.

10. Wait No More - 3:04
11. Bridge - 5:28

Friends and collaborators from Ottawa and Pembroke, The Wicked Mercy began playing shows in early 2012. Initially formed as a group of friends jamming, blasting loud, dirty blues in their basements and living rooms. With time they have melded and evolved as a group, fusing heavy, lovelorn rock’n’roll stylings into their own urgent and honest sound. Since forming, the band has played Ottawa, Pembroke, Montreal, Toronto and surrounding areas relentlessly, delivering raucous performances and captivating audiences. The Wicked Mercy has built a fan base the old way, playing hard and often.Influenced by the old but inspired by the new. The Wicked Mercy blend swampy southern blues with cold rock. Sometimes compared to the Sheepdogs, Queens of the Stone Age, the Doors and the Brian Jonestown Massacre. The Wicked Mercy have fused traditional rock & roll with elements gypsy, psychedelic and metal, creating a tight layered sound.Singer Case Bakker leads the group with blistering vocals, sharp lyrics, blasts of harmonica with a telecaster on hand. An unmistakable and integral part of the band is the guitar work of Dave Nado. Piercing and visceral, his guitar lines leave an impression with all listeners. The rhythm section is held down by 5-string rock funkateer Mark Sudiacal on bass and seasoned veteran drummer Cory Zadorozny (ex Sam Roberts Band). The latest addition to the group is the charming Erik Hertzberg on organ, keys and vocals. The Wicked Mercy released their debut self-titled album April 2013. Recorded in Pembroke with Jordon Zadorozny (Sam Roberts, Blinker the Star, Courtney Love) it is an impressive first release from a young band. It has been a strong beginning from this young band. Only gaining speed, there is much more on the horizon. Talented and ambitious, The Wicked Mercy is going places.
Two years later, the group gives birth to its second work in studio. Produced as always by Jordon, the album contains 11 titles and a collector's bonus for the European version. From Tell Me Goodbye's intro and its influence The Cult, we enter The Wicked Mercy's universe with enjoyment. On Everyone but yours, a section of brass instruments comes supported this heavy swampesque blues. And if Sundown was the LOVE of The Wicked Mercy?  Don’t Break Down is powerful and sends back us to the best of Golden Earring. The rhythm of the album is heavy as evening in the bayou where certain Sabbath would be danced. Bridge closes the record of a way of deprived of subtleties, as night without stars.

Born in 1969 in San Mateo, California, blues guitarist Eric Lindell spent much of his youth in nearby Santa Rosa and Forestville. Although he worked as a baker by day, Lindell turned his focus to music in the evenings, honing his chops as a competent vocalist and guitarist by playing in bars around Sonoma County. He produced his debut album, Bring It Back, in 1996, and in 1999 he won the John Lennon Songwriting Competition with his original piece "Kelly Ann." That same year, Lindell decided to move to New Orleans to pursue music in a different location. The move was a beneficial one, as Lindell soon hooked up with Galactic's Stanton Moore and began playing shows around town, frequently enlisting drummers Johnny Vidocovich and Harold Brown (from War) to sit in. He issued a self-released, self-titled record in 2002, but the following year saw him move to Sparco Records, where he released both Piety Street Session and EP Volume 1. Tragic Magic followed in 2005 and sparked serious interest from Alligator Records, which released Change in the Weather in 2006 and Low on Cash, Rich in Love in 2008. Lindell continued his prolific output with 2009's Gulf Coast Highway, another album of blue-eyed soul and confident guitar work. Leaving Alligator Records, Lindell put out a couple of albums to sell at gigs, 2010’s Cazadero and 2011’s Between Motion and Rest, both of which were combined in a two-disc release entitled West County Drifter from M.C. Records in the fall of 2011. ~ Marisa Brown
